I found this awesome detroit style pizza place a few months ago in a nearby neighborhood. Didn't get to order there too often since they were closed sundays and that's when I usually order pizza, but it was decadent and dope AF.

Find out today they closed last week. To "make way for two new plant-based concepts"....starting with a ******* vegan traditional jewish bagel deli.

How can it be "traditional"? Soy-Lox isn't traditional.

The owners run a vegan diner next door...do they think this is going to succeed? Vegan diner next door to vegan deli?...potential third vegan concept coming in 2020? They are just going to cannibalize their own sales. They are not in a prime vegan neighborhood and they are not in a dining destination neighborhood.

My teenage daughter has one friend who is a rather preachy vegetarian. As far as I can tell, all she eats is bread, pasta and candy -- while lecturing everyone else about their "unhealthy" diets. Not sure that's going to work out well for her long term ...

I was going to try one of those meatless burgers ( just to try it out ), and then it bothered me to read they are not any healthier than meat burgers. Why then?

Anyone tried one of them? Their stock prices are booming.

Also, I resent the term "plant-based" being used to push towards veganism

Pizza is plant based at its core. Wheat is a plant, tomato is a plant. That's 2/3 of the primary ingredients coming straight from a plant. The crust...the literal base of the dish is all plant. Yes, real cheese is animal derived, and many common toppings are meat...but its not like we are talking about steak or meatloaf here.

I like plants a lot and enjoy eating them...I even think we eat too much meat and scale it back in exchange for high quality produce...that's what I would call a plant-based diet. Plant-only isn't "plant-based"....it is just "plants". Just like water-based paint still contains pigments and an American-based company can still open up a branch in Hamburg if it wants.

I was going to try one of those meatless burgers ( just to try it out ), and then I read they are not any healthier than meat burgers. That's a No Go for me.

Anyone tried one of them? Their stock prices are booming.

They aren't bad. Did a side-by-side of the whopper and impossible whopper. Honestly, I couldn't tell you if one was better or worse. I could tell that they were different, but if you handed me the impossible one and told me it was just a burger king burger, I would believe you. Nutrition facts are *worse* on the fake one though.

Done by a real burger cook (not an overcooked fast food patty), the results are not bad. I think Impossible wins over Beyond there.

The impossible burger is plant based but highly processed with lots of sodium. It’s like me eating a protein bar and telling people that are eating grilled chicken that they’re being unhealthy.

Fun fact, saturated fats (such as from dairy and meat) are highly protective against alcoholic liver disease. Which I imagine would be fairly relevant in that particular context. ;)
