Fit from this weekend seeing Joshua Bell in concert for Valentine's Day/2nd anniversary. Man, classical music is great, but the environment at concert halls is abysmal, it's so unapproachable and, frankly, old. No one else there under 30 without a chaperone/parent (the parking garage on the way out, as a result, is even worse).

^ Bell is fantastic … unfortunately it's a sad state of affairs culturally these days.

Everything fits nicely, but a bit casual for the concert hall IMO.

Contemporary music can be a bit better, but there's a lot of baggage that this kind of music is still lugging (and that is NOT a metaphor for older listeners... seriously... I'm talking about the traditional environments in which it's performed). Funny thing is, I've been shushed at what I guess you'd call and alt-folk concert at a bar, and rightly so. I was talking and you had to be quiet and listen to really hear the music. You can find some really great series/performances in other than the usual venues, but probably not for a performer of Bell's stature.

Thanks, I think I agree that it was a bit on the casual side, and I should have brought a dressier jacket. It was at the Strathmore and my grandmother (who goes there often) assured me it was a more "casual" and "intimate" place than the Meyerhoff in Baltimore (this turned out to be basically just random untrue-but-mildly-entertaining commentary).

Yeah, the prior weeks I had seen Lupe Fiasco, Muse, and Ratatat. I think I'm going to just stick to contemporary music and show up in sweats/jeans/anything that won't get me judged by wealthy "high class" older people.

I was talking about contemporary classical music, which I guess I could have said. Maybe we can call it art music, but that seems kind of snobby. Anyway, for example, there's a contemporary music series at Northwestern's Bienen School and one associated with the CSO at one of the big venues downtown. You can hear some really interesting even pretty wild stuff, and the crowds skew younger. Venues are still "concert halls," however.

I've been to the SF Symphony Hall twice. Once for a Haydn concerto, the other for Erykah Badu & Mos Def. I think I feel asleep at both performances. The whole venue is carpeted in soporific beige/brown. Needs more lasers.
