Was *this* close to pulling the trigger on a grail watch, but found a piece of art (OK, three pieces of art) I wanted even more. So many vices, only so much discretionary expenditure that can get by the bedroom audit committee in any given quarter.
When I have competing hobbies to spend money on, I lie to myself and say they’re separately budgeted so buying both is ok.

Yeah, I actually saw a lovely Piaget "tank" with a stone dial on Chrono, but the condition was not great. The reason for vintage DD, rather than new one, is more about "toning" the watch down a bit and I think a stone dial might result in the opposite?
Wood for example is toning down a bit and quite interesting. 😉

Super location ! But man those bracelets 🙁. They spoil a good watch.
I’m in my island vibe. They have the symbols from the pre-Colombian Petroglyphs found on St. John.

what kind of stone is it?
It’s Onyx. I think I would have been just as happy if this was done with a black lacquer dial instead, but it is kind of cool knowing it’s something more than paint, even if only I will actually know.

Yah some exotic dials on a vintage DD -- e.g. Stella dials -- give the piece "bling" that I really do not want. I understand Stella dials . . . and the watches can be amazing . . . but just not for me. Same can be said for some stone dials for sure.

On the NEW onyx dials, I really like the presence of the white veining. But what I dont like is that all the dials seem to have the same format for the white vein. I wish it was more "interesting."

On the vintage all-black onyx dials, I think that allure for me would be the total absence of indices/numerals. That's an interesting look.

I'm not a fan of the diamond-6 and diamond-9 version of vintage onyx dials. Which is too bad because those are more common right now it seems (maybe because people don't like them so much).

I think my watch would be interesting with some veining, but I think they hit a healthy balance between giving plenty of space to show off the inky blackness, while adding the right kind of indexes to still keep it austere. Another pic, because why not...

I tried on the new onyx dial, and it just didn't look right to my eye. From some angles the veining looked almost like the dial had a crack in it. I know it didn't, but it just didn't look work for me. I prefer the vintage all black onyx without any marks on the dial.

I had a client years ago who had an old YG DD with a malachite dial, and that was just way TOO MUCH happening.

Agree, not a fan of the dials with a diamond at 6 or 9. It's the perfect watch for someone who is a used car sales manager during by day, and piano player who wears a pinky ring with little diamonds by night.
