Completely agree: pumps are ideal.  As lordsuperb was looking for alternatives to something, I assumed that pumps weren't an option and a less formal shoe was desired.

I particularly like the length and shape of the vamp on those.  Where are they from?
They are Gaziano & Girling. But I posted them to illustrate the sole rather than the upper. Less is more, sole wise, when considering shoes for formal wear.

Here is something from G&G that is a bit less conservative but still works IMO.

Notice the low profile sole.

I think that type of Derby works better than a wholecut or Oxford for black tie.

Not my personal taste but the first custom Tuxedo I've been able to make. It's for a royals baseball player party.

Not sure what your budget is or how exactly a match you're looking for, but onyx on yellow gold is fairly common.  A quick search at Brooks Brothers found a stud & link set that matches pretty closely.  Otherwise I'd just watch ruby lane closely until something turns up.

Unfortunately I'm looking for something pretty much exactly like that - just the MOP stud exposed without the "halo" of metal around it. I do have a gold and onyx set, but I am looking for something without the gold being visible for a more minimalist appearance. And to match my plain pearl cufflinks (which also don't have any metal framing)

Last weekend, a rare opportunity to wear black tie - a "Midnight in Paris" themed birthday party. I guess i stretched the theme a bit as I was the only one who showed up in formal wear but I had no problem with that. I had this tuxedo made by Chan about 8 years ago. My weight has yo-yo'd quite a bit since then and the tuxedo has alternated between too big and too small - I wear it rarely so the fit is a surprise each time. As it turns out, I am just about back where I started and the fit isnt bad.I dont have a working tuxedo shirt so forgive the buttons.
