I liberated an '85 sauternes from my mother in law's cellar. I am wary it was never properly kept and will make me sad to drink.

Had with my rotisserie chicken meal last night. Perfectly matured extreme Sonoma Coast, tannins smooth as silk, Bing cherries, smoke, a kiss of vanilla from the oak treatment. I could have slammed the whole bottle in one long chug.

How do you guys suggest figuring out where a red is ready to drink?

I started out, long ago, using the guidelines in Zraly's book, and basically learning what wines -- and what grapes -- are meant to age. I've let a few go too long on me, not the worst thing in the world either with a $20 wine.

Italian Bordeaux from Chianti. This is the 2013, which needs a few more years I think.

This is like rosé on steroids. Dark copper color, lot of red fruits and earth. Very good.
