Thanks! That's probably why it doesn't appear to be buttoned in any of the photoshoots I've seen it featured in. FYI, Imogene + Willie has a really nice blanket stripe over shirt this season that's a little closer to what I was hoping for.

Imogene + Willie probably only other brand I've been consistently interested in their stuff.

Also, this was a great looking shirt but seriously, what is with the double fabric shirts this season? I can hear those design meetings now:

D: so what are we gonna do to add unwanted and totally superfluous design elements that are cheap to execute, but can be leveraged to justify a price premium?

A: Hey, so there is this process of adding in a second fabric that nobody ever sees...

I always find these shirts to be two cheap fabrics instead of one solid fabric too

This coat is gorgeous, geezus. Fits real nice with RRL’s offerings this season:

Totally agree - completely superfluous and impractical for everyday wear. Really wanted to love that western shirt until I saw the liner, which is pretty hideous. If I wanted shirts like that I'd buy Etro...ha!

I'm loving this whole collection, but these are some of my favorite pieces.

Grizzly - really well constructed. Buttons are very sturdy - feel like the designers may have learned their lesson from the sherpa trucker jacket last season. Those buttons were terrible. Fit is classic and true to size.

Cardigan - beautifully woven sweater that's a little more fitted than other styles. If you intend on layering with this piece, you may want to size up. The Scottish wool is amazing!

Sweater / Over Shirt - such an underrated piece in the collection. The color looks a little muted compared to the catalog and online images, but it's a really handsome garment that's very well constructed and the fabric is much softer than I expected. The buckle back jeans (bottom left) are also amazing!

Puffer Vest - love the color combination. The leather compliments the washed out teal very well - and it's only going to get better with age. Really glad to see that this has become a more consistent piece in fall/winter collections. Rocky Mountain Featherbed and Sugar Cane use to be the only resources for pieces like these. FYI, this year's vest runs a little smaller compared to a similar navy/suede style I have from a couple years ago.

Fringed Newsboy Jacket - I couldn't wait to check this piece out when it first appeared in the catalog. Unfortunately, it's pretty much identical to last year's jacket with the embroidery on the shoulder yoke and sleeves. It's a"newsboy" style jacket we've seen in a few different collections - nothing special. Unlike last year's piece, this leather feels more supple and it doesn't smell like it was treated with wax or a chemical. Would have liked to see this in a slightly longer buttoned car coat style with fringes on the sleeves.

Cheers!

I mean, I must confess, I did pick this one up, but that was solely based on the outside-facing pattern. Would have been just as happy with it at a hundred bucks less, but without that inner lining

I have that one inbound myself. I agree the regular pattern was the main selling point for me

About how often do they release new Plainview boots models? I’m mostly just curious. think I ordered the Java a half size too big, but the FW color doesn’t speak to me, so I’ll roll with insoles. I didn’t know if it’s most seasons or sometimes a year+ between

The chelsea style is pretty much always available, but sometimes the designers will use a different leather (hair on hide, leather, suede) or overlay pattern. The plainview cowboy boots (made by Rios of Mercedes) have also been available for a while, but they finally added a new color this year and a limited edition boot made with leather that's been sourced from the ranch.

Back in the “day” JCrew really did make some nice clothing. I had a good bit of their Wallace and Barnes stuff, and some of their collabs (including Belstaff) were really well done. They made some really nice peacoats also (I know this one isn’t JCrew, just reminded I had a couple of theirs through the years). Not much there appeals to me much these days unfortunately. Coat looks great!

I bought a peacoat from J. Crew back in 2009 or 2010 and it was by far the nicest peacoat I had ever owned. I bought it to replace a Sterlingwear milspec one that I had bought at the Naval Exchange on Norfolk back in '99 or '00. I thought the Sterlingwear one was pretty nice and that it was cool that it was the real deal but the J. Crew one was so much warmer (IIRC, it had a quilted "Primaloft" liner) and the wool was noticeably nicer in just about every regard.

I wore the jacket all winter for 5 or 6 years but sadly my midsection expanded too much and I had to send it to Goodwill. I went back to J. Crew for a replacement but by then, the ones they were offering were trash - no quilted lining, paper thin scratchy wool, too short in the length, etc. I sent that back and "upgraded" to a Schott. The Schott is pretty nice but I still miss the one I bought from J. Crew years ago.

FWIW, J. Crew has a pretty nice looking peacoat again this season and they now have a quilted lining again. The last thing I need is more outerwear but I am curious to see if it is anywhere near as nice as their old ones.

As for the rest of J. Crew... I used to love them and then they took a big downturn in terms of quality about a dozen years ago. Over the past couple years though they seem to have made an effort to turn things around and each season there is usually an item or two that really calls to me.
