For those of you who wear a non-standard size, how do find your size? Is it best to develop a relationship with a retail store? Or do you order a makeup from AOC or similar?

I wear 11B, 11C, or sometimes 11.5B.

Pre-orders at any of the shops that offer them. No need for a special relationship if it is standard materials (calf, cxl, suede, black/#8 shell).
Edit to add: some will require you to pay in full up front. You'll also want to pounce right away when you see one you like, because they can only order in a couple widths at a time.
Anyone own boot on the military last? Fit true to size? AoC has a pair of snuff suede im considering if i dont go the Indy route
Low instep guy here. I size down half as another contributor suggested. One of my best fitting boots!
Yep, I closed the office and just doing some consulting. House up for sale and I will leave when it sells.
Doc, don't most people retire TO the sun and away from snow??? All joking aside, congratulations! I hope PA treats you well!

Alden of San Francisco and Sherman Brothers have the largest amount of stock listed online for B and C widths. You could visit or order one of each size in the lasts you're interested in from them. Not sure about the narrow and wide widths available at D.C. and Madison Avenue. The Shoe Mart has some, but not nearly as much as SF and Sherman Brothers. I experimented with used eBay finds as well.
