Anyone know what causes the oxidation of eyelets or what can be done to stop it? It stains my laces and actually starts to rub and fray them.

Seems to be a reaction between the metal and leather; my shell watch strap metal does this too. Maybe some wax over the area?

This has happened on a couple of my shell pairs. Just a reaction between the metal and the tanning oils from what I’ve been told. I’ve always managed to remove it with a horsehair brush. Nothing to worry about.

Not necessarily related to oxidation, but a buddy of mine showed me that using VSC helps remove excess dye from eyelets/hooks. He applied VSC to a microfiber cloth and went to town rubbing the dye off. Worked wonders!

Agree those were good times (I still enjoy my reverse suede HMs) but I'm happy the current AE custom shop offers far more flexibility than any single group MTO configuration option.

My latest custom project just arrived sporting some overall packaging improvement. First, this is my first encounter with the new boxes with printed white logotype and new label design (more readable if storing in the box, and nice to see customization acknowledged with more than an ABCDOT):

In a welcome return of old school packaging, the shoes are once again wrapped in separate cloth shoe bags — someone must have finally remembered that when packing shoes for travel two freely placeable bags are better than stitching them together in a single bag with two pockets. Also, each bag as a removable inner semi-transparent dust jacket - very handy for shelf storage that lets you ID the contents.

I'm really having so much fun with customs that I've pretty much lost interest in off-the-shelf styles. And the longer make-up times have helped me pace myself with more selective ordering than my usual weasel-induced binge frenzies, which has actually been wallet-friendly despite the higher per-order cost.

I wasn’t “quite” thrilled with the factory coloring on these Walnut Shell Randolph Seconds (plus: they have probably been sitting at the Bank for about 10 years), so I stripped the top finish and re-polished with Saphir Fawn and Brown Cordovan Cremes (after nourishing with Bick 4 and Renovateur).

The Normandy doesn't get enough foot time with me, due to a number of odd decisions (the sole, the lack of speed hooks, etc.). But, I try to make sure they get some time on June 6th and November 11th every year. Just feels appropriate.
