Maybe I’m a crypto rube, but can anyone explain why you would keep deposits in a bank like this?

I thought the whole point was the decentralization, you keep your money in your own wallet and you don’t need a bank (and a number of banks/exchanges have failed spectacularly).

When I dabbled in it, I bought currency on coin base but then immediately transferred it to my personal wallet and out of any third party control. Only transfer out to exchange.

NGL i had never heard of SVB before now. And I’m a banker!
Have dealt with them, but you’d have to be in or in the orbit of the startup scene.

In my case it was connecting them to a very capital intensive startup that was also being cuddled. SVB was interested to invest, the startup went bust two months ago after burning through 70mln.
