I'd highly advise against it. That fabric is very basic and the hand is unimpressive.

I think it really depends on what you're going for... I live in New Orleans, where it's hot and humid 2/3 of the year and I love the VBC high twist trousers I bought last summer. I wear them all the time. If I hadn't already purchased 2 high twist suits and a blazer this summer I would definitely be trying out one of the sportcoats or suits in that fabric because it performs so well here.

Does it drape as well as the Clissold that I bought at the beginning of the summer? No, but it's also way more comfortable to wear in the heat.

Absolutely! I just thing there's better high twist fabrics out there than this one. I handled a suit from Suitsupply in this fabric and I didn't like it at all

I'm so tired of all the issues with Spier's button threading. It seems like every garment I buy from them (aside from tailoring) has had janky buttons. I've lost buttons on their chinos, field jackets, chore coats, overcoats... nearly every casual shirt I've gotten has had unraveling threads on the buttons. It's a persistent QA failure and I'm over it. If any employees still read this forum please address.

I received them yesterday, bought them for the same reason as you - bridging the gap between dressy and casual. Also because I couldn't find good white selvedge jeans
What's the consensus on the Off White Denim High Rise Trouser (the one with side adjusters)?

I'm particularly concerned about whether the rise measurements are consistent with the measurement chart.

I've spent so much time looking for cream high rise jeans that I've decided to just bite the bullet and spend the money on Spier's...assuming the sizing is ok.

Thanks.

I dunno, I think that these are weird. Dress trouser cut with side adjusters in denim? Either get off white dress trousers in wool or linen, or off white jeans.

It is frustrating to say the least. Even cheap fast fashion rarely has the button issues SM seems to have. I have gotten in the habit of reinforcing the buttons I know are poorly attached as soon as I receive the product. Regarding a SM employee seeing your message or even making an appearance on here; I think we've all given up on that haha.

Ciao ragazzi! I was in Italy so of course has to dress like an Italian at least a couple times.

Everything is Spier but the shoes are Meermin.

Was considering Meermin but ended up going with Jay Butler in the dark brown suede because of the shorter heel (personal preference). Anyway, looking dapper, my man. Loving the trousers.

The inner button on one of my paper chinos went after exactly 2 wears and 1 gentle cycle wash. A couple of buttons on other chinos look like they might be ready to go. The rivet buttons on my canvas twill and 5 pocket cords have fared very well in contrast.

Luckily, my dry cleaner is very good at repairs and minor alterations. It's an added expense that shouldn't be unnecessary, but I know that button ain't going anywhere when I get it back.

Had this issue for years now. Shirts and outerwear. I know my way around a needle and thread so I've been able to fix it but still. QC has ALWAYS been a problem with S&M. I'm at the point with S&M that it's a "you get what you pay for" type of gamble.

I thought they just bought one of those fancy machines that seals the buttons preventing this, maybe it will take place on the FW pieces?

Unrelated to the current comments about buttons (which luckily for me I have never experienced), I was just contemplating this weekend what an incredible value S&M can present - especially during one of their sales.

Was focusing on the VBC flannel chalk stripe suits:

The cloth in that suit is from VBC's Lady Sanfelice Flannels bunch. Nice cloth 340gsm (about 12oz). Same exact cloth used by Proper Cloth, Cavour, and others in suits that sell for way, way more than S&M's price.

Further, this cloth is sold through Drapers Italy (related company) and the non-trade price is just under 150 Euros a meter. I take one of the larger S&M sizes in suits (and I'm lucky that I get a very nice fit off the peg in their suits)...so conservatively to make such a suit for me I would have to consider buying 3.5 meters of this cloth.

At the non-trade price from Drapers Italy, just the VBC flannel cloth in the above suit in my size would cost me $777 Canadian.

That suit is currently on sale at S&M for $478 Canadian.

(Yes - I realize that tailors pay less for the cloth, and a big operator like S&M would pay even less again...but still...it presents an incredible - and likely unbeatable - value.)

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
