the chimayo vests and coats are legit amazing and worth a mention . ortega's is the label i know .

Thanks for bringing up Chimayo clothing. Chimayo garments and rugs are very special and unique to this area. Ortegas and Trujillos are perhaps the best known of the Chimayo weavers and for keeping this authentic Southwest tradition alive. If you visit Chimayo you can stop by their stores and see them weave. In conversations with them, they tell of Japanese and European retailers and fashion brands coming in and buying dozens to hundreds of Jackets, coats, vests and blankets. If you are interested you can contact them directly at https://www.chimayoweavers.com On this site they also have an extensive history of the area, weaving and the Spanish and Mexican influences.

I'll be sure to let them know.

Shooting rifles in the air as celebration must be a Hispanic culture thing. Where I live there is a rather substantial Hispanic presence and, yes, local authorities do periodically remind them not to shoot their guns into the air.;)

Spent 8 years in NM. Land of enchantment it is.

Santa Fe is amazing. Further north are places where Georgia O Keefe painted.

Have friends whose parents were hippies who moved there in the 60s. Have slept in the same room where Janis Joplin stayed.

Miss it!!

Great thread! Another big NM/SW fan here - wondering if anyone else knows much about the Catholic lay organization the Penitente Brotherhood, Los Hermanos de Luz ,whose members disappear into the mountains during Holy Week for secret rituals centered around self-flagellation and the crucifixion? Real medieval stuff...

Was that in Truchas (where this photo was shot)? Truchas and Taos were where Janis Joplin was hanging out.

I haven't heard stories of self-flagellation but during the week before Good Friday I do see the devout walking along the highway from Albuquerque on the way up to Chimayo (about 90 miles). The NM Highway Dept puts up these signs.

Speaking of Georgia O'Keefe, this is my favorite photo of her and taken near her home in Abiquiu. Note the early buckleback Levis and the 1944 license plate on the vintage Indian or Harley.

Dennis Hopper Southwest Style

Dennis Hopper discovered Taos, New Mexico and its unique style during one of his many scouting trips in the mid 60's for the movie “Easy Rider,”. As an actor living in L.A. he wore classic Hollywood preppy, clad in T-shirts and khakis with his Brooks Brothers raincoats. (quoting his daughter) "Once in the Southwest he wrapped himself head to toe in denim, man bag invariably in tow... Turquoise stones crowned his belt buckles and Stetsons, every surface bejeweled with royal abandon. He wore coats woven from Navajo blankets lined in sheepskin."

Santa Fe Vintage - Founded by the late Scott Corey, a former cowboy, bartender, pipe fitter, blues musician and Alaskan crab fisherman, he assembled the "motherload" of select vintage Southwest, military, workwear apparel so it's no wonder why fashion brands and movie stylists have made this out-of-the-way spot a "must see" destination. GQ called it one of "The Coolest Off-the-Beaten-Path Shops In America". Located near the regional airport in an industrial building on the South end of town, the traditions of Santa Fe Vintage are carried on by Theo Griscom. If you love vintage leather jackets, denim and camo and all things genuine Cowboy/Biker/Southwest, you won't want to miss this insiders spot. My wife loves this spot for vintage bandanas in all colors. Prior appointments are required.

Pretty sure that's a Boy Scouts Order of the Arrow sash in the first photo

It is. It's the second level of the O.O.A. Interesting how much Native American symbolism and lore made it's way into the Boy Scouts. Most Boy Scout Camps and All OOA lodges were Indian names.
