Good shoes but too classic.....
You do need some creativity or clacissism with a twist...
You need some Lobb and if you feel adventurous some Berluti or Gaziano&Girling...
Have you thought of going bespoke?
Some designers like Corthay or Gomez?

Those names are probably out of his budget, as he describes his collection as "mid-range" and admits to never paying retail, so I doubt he's really willing to get adventurous with some even higher-end shoes than he has. "Needing" Lobb is something only read on the fashion forum circuit.

Thanks, both. If I mention that my ideal price range is £50-100 and my absolute maximum for a simgle pair of shoes is £175, that gives some idea of my parameters. (The most expensive pair I have cost £140, and the most I have spent within the last two years is £89 for the C&Js.) These are new prices, as I've decided that pre-owned shoes aren't worth the dark looks from Mrs J and her mother!

Some Lobbs, G&G, Edward Green or Crockett & Jones Handgrades would be lovely some day but not, I think, feasible for the forseeable future. I would like to have more brown shoes even though I don't wear the colour that often at the moment - I find myself wearing black 5-6 days a week.

I do believe that luxury is an addiction to certain standards...
My mum used to tell me how easy it is to going up and how painful it is to go down...
When you do taste Lobb or green ,it is difficult to wear Church's for example...
But is it better to have 20 pairs of shoes you do like or 2 or 3 you do love, even if something it is finishing as 20 pairs you do love!!!!!!!!!

I'm afraid that I'm still at the point when I couldn't bear to spend as much as I'd need to for a pair of Lobb's (for example); considering what else I could/should have done with the money would bother me too much. One day, perhaps!

Prices at the Lobb factory shop range from £125 for reduced old models, £185 for old models and £235 for current lines including prestige. Go on, you know you want to

The criticism of Church is grossly exaggerated too.

The "Church post Prada" mantra is trotted out too freely.

Occasionally, I suspect the criticism is simply received dictum that is then promoted as one's own view in the comforting knowledge that such an opinion will be well received.

Church do not help themselves on price. They do however, produced far better shoes in 2007 than some are prepared to recognize. Perhaps a Church outlet needs to be visited... for academic purposes, if not retail!

The factory shop in Northampton is quite interesting ,offering very big discounts on older models..
Have you thought of something intermediate such as JM WESTON?
You can also buy some JM WESTON ,a brand offering a good mix between british construction and continental flair...
The Beaubourg line is superb...They're between £300/400 new...
You can have them sometimes on ebay..

honestly, a lot of these top of line brands (EG, C&J Handgrade and Benchgrade, Grenson Masterpiece) are not worth the extra cost at full retail. Once you get past AE, the amount of "quality" you get doesn't correlate very well with the extra cost.

i've said it many times before, it helps that i prefer the aesthetics of AE (360 welting and larger heel) over many of these English and Continental brands... Which is why I keep going back to AE even though I have the above mentioned English makes.

Get thee behind me, Satan!

....

On the other hand, perhaps I do need to pay a visit to my elderly grandparents, who just happen to live in Corby, not so very far away from N'ton ........................

Nice collection, too many black shoes for my taste, but otherwise very nice.
