I will ascribe your ignorance in this matter to your relative youth. I was wearing prep at school, and calling it that, 15 years before Birnbach.

But that can't be! We've all been assured by various experts that the look, and the names for it, are totally made up! Are you sure you are not suffering from false conciousness?

Boat shoes, chinos and two layered polo shirts with a surcingle belt. Tweed jackets worn with a scarf tied in a four in hand and an OCBD, cords and cordovan tassel loafers. The clothes of my youth.

Honestly, I was wholly unfamiliar with the term "Trad" before I found this site, I knew elements of the style and whatnot, just wondering if they were any books on the subject, preferably with big pictures and small words

Hello Reuben,

Basically Trad and Preppy are just variations of the Ivy league style.

I don't know of any decent books on the subject, but if your looking for pictures I suggest visiting these websites which specialise in the style, and then order
their catalogues.

I just can't -- I won't -- believe you. If this is true, then so much of what I have read and come to believe is wrong. Nooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"The Look" by Paul Gorman. Not "trad" but lots of good pages on how ivy league style influenced British youth subculture style.

For ruben: I ordered and just received last week, and have read, "The Privileged Life; Celebrating WASP style" by Susanna Salk (available through Amazon). All who like the trad look I think would appreciate especially the photos, many two pages across, and in color, of houses, icons, sports, ivy league (trad) clothes and colleges, and more. Others, like Harris, are more knowledgeable and may have other sources. (see the askandyaboutclothes.com Trad forum for hall of fame postings including pictures).

As an aside, although we've not met, it appears Manton has extra time or imbibing on his hands; as some have indicated of A. Squire who has many posts on the Trad forum (this comment of course comes from someone who'se retired and is a lover of single malts)
