RTW suit that isn’t slim fit for under £1000

Apologies if there’s a Q&A thread where this question would be better placed, feel free to delete and point me to it if so.

I have a funeral to go to rather unexpectedly in two weeks, and I need a suit. I don’t mind buying rather than renting as whilst I don’t wear a suit regularly it would be useful to have.

Budget is ideally around £1000 but could go £1500 if necessary.

I tend to wear more regular fitting clothing these days (Drake’s makes up a large part of my wardrobe) so many of the RTW suits I see seem to be incredibly slim looking. Specifically the trousers. I want a tailored look, but not slim trousers.

Having Googled, Suit Supply seems to come up a lot but even even their trousers look very slim to me.

The issue is I’m of slim-average build and tall (6’1, 185lb) so looser fitting jackets aren’t ideal either.

Any recommendations for RTW in my budget that have a more classic silhouette? Ideally dark navy.

Agree with the sentiment above. But if you are looking for a more English cut Ede and Ravenscroft make a very nice suit. I have also discovered that the new Milano line of Suit Supply is not as fitted and slim as the other and the trousers are very very good fit. Avoid Lazio or Havana

Many thanks. I'd not heard of Natalino or Anglo-Italian and both indeed look like exactly what I had in mind. The Anglo-Italian trousers in particular look really great.

Just to note, I find Natalino a great budget option but just be wary that there might be some minor QC issues with the stitching (I experienced some in all garments I had from them that were made in Italy), so allocate plenty of time if some extra work is required from the tailor.

Thanks. I’ve just placed an order from them and it should arrive on Monday. I have a good local place for alterations and from what I can see the trousers/sleeves are unfinished so will need to go and see him anyways.

If you are regular an Drop 7, go for Drop 6-7, drop 8 would be slim fit for you..Canali and Corneliani are making drop 6-7-8. They are full canvas under $1500 for sure even with tailoring adjustments

Thanks, I did look at Canali and it's within budget. Details and cloths look nice, the only reason I didn't go for it is that the styling in the product photos is quite different to how I'd wear it so it's difficult to picture how it might look. Unfortunately I'm nowhere near a retailer so whilst less than ideal, I'm having to order online.

Perhaps I'm out of touch but seems a lot of RTW suits these days are shown with untucked tees, sneakers and unbuttoned coats which makes it sort of difficult to gauge the cut and how it might look buttoned with a shirt.

Definitely an option if I find the Natalino isn't quite right.

If you like very British style you might look into Cordings. I have never
tried their tailored clothing as I don't like British cuts, but their shirts are
very full, and IMHO, a bargain for the price.

Just an update to this, I ended up trying both Cavour and Natalino. The Cavour jacket fitted well but the trousers were much too slim, and the cloth was fine but not what I was looking for in this instance.

I tried the Natalino in navy flannel and it's fantastic. The 36 trousers are a perfect fit and the 50L jacket also fits very well. I had the sleeves shortened by an inch but other than that it fits well through the waist/chest and very nicely on the shoulders.

The cloth is also really nice. Decent construction and has a 'handmade' look to it for want of a better term.

I'd happily get another suit from them, very impressed given the price point.

Thanks for the recommendations!

After thinking it’s ok, I can’t shake the feeling the jacket is too long. It seems to hang exactly around my thumb knuckle and along the base of my backside but it looks too long to me.

The length seems correct to me. I think our perception of how long a jacket should be has shifted in recent years due to the massive trend of shorter (and often poorly-fitting) jackets. Generally, though, a well-fitting jacket should reach the thumb's knuckle and completely cover your bottom in the back.

the upper button is made poorly and kind of destroys the lapel form
On the other hand Only few makers can make a good 3 roll 2 buttons that almost has no affect on the lapel

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
