When dining, should you remove your suit jacket or sport coat or is it considered proper to leave it on?

I leave it on but unbutton it as well. You wouldn't want to expose your braces now would you?

Same. Unbutton, but leave it on. The only time I might consider taking it off would be informal outdoor eating such as lunch after a Bar (or Bat) Mitzvah.

I try to leave it on; but, if it is a 2-3 hr meal and I'm drinking I get hot so now and then before desert I might take it off.

I keep my jacket on in restaurants. I've found that an unlined jacket stays a bit cooler when worn indoors, which makes it more comfortable.

Let me add that I do take my jacket off if I'm eating at home or I'm out and eating something that has the potential to get messy easily. This happens very rarely as when I'm out to dinner and wearing a jacket I usually avoid ordering such things. I think one should always be practical regardless of social norms. Never be afraid to make exceptions; just make sure they're justified.

It would always depend on the circumstances. At a formal meal one would not but in informal surroundings there is no problem in taking it off.

I leave it on, but unbuttoned, unless it is double-breasted. (I can just imagine all of you unbuttoning your double-breasted jackets when sitting down. You might as well un-zip/button your fly, too.
