Yeah, but then you're stuck working at FB. Which sucks.

"Move fast with stable infra." It's a bunch of children playing dress up as engineers.

Starting salary (not including bonus, benefits, stock) for a kid out of college at the large software companies (MSFT, Google, Amazon, Facebook, etc) is $100k. Which is still less than starting salary at a place like Goldman.

They are competing with startups, which offer a lot less in immediate financial compensation, but a lot more in terms of fulfilling a dream. Everyone I know at Google complains about title deflation and lack of opportunities for advancement and getting their ideas seriously considered. This is consistent with my experience at large institutions. Ain't nothing in the world that's free.

The starting salaries for pretty much all the Japanese companies I looked at were just abysmal, and most were in Tokyo too. Tech seems to be especially bad relative to everywhere else though.

Japan is not in a great place, economically, right now.

Yes. The tradeoffs are more than just financial. If I work on AWS then I'm building software to power millions of computers on the world's most heavily used cloud. The learning, impact, and opportunities for growth are incredibly valuable to career growth, assuming someone is mature enough to value that. But, because it's a large institution, there will be resistance to newness, process that can feel stifling, and I'm not going to become a millionaire overnight (although Amazon's stock is having a remarkable run). If I work at a startup, the scope and impact will be much less upfront but the (statistically unlikely) payoff is much higher; not just financial payoff, but chance of having anyone actually use what you build. For example, the college kid working on search at Google or Windows at Microsoft is working on something that millions use everyday. Also, the talent pool has general shifted back to the large institutions from the startups (compared to ten years ago, when there was a large exodus); the great engineers aren't working at Instacart or Tindr or whatever.

@gdl203 i'm curious to hear your thoughts on the sustainability of our current retail model and what alternatives might replace it in the near future

Not directed to me, but since I work in the space in a variety of roles:

1) Exclusive product, including self branded product. Limited (see Epaulets end for friends) deals are even better. GMTOs are here as well.
2) Non-seasonal, nearly continuous drops.
3) related to 2) very shallow buys, combined with retargetting and notifications ( e.g. Alert: there is only one product left)

Essentially anything that makes markdowns price wars lose their potency.

hanes has some new v necks, comfort blend i think, which is like 60% cotton some polyester and rayon. they fit great and hold their shape, especially compared to the all cotton versions.

Anyone in LA that can conveniently drop by Just One Eye to check out their warehouse sale for me? Interested to see what Lemaire stock they have available on the floor.

Any one who's ordered from Kindal on Rakuten know how long it takes to receive your item? Trying to figure out if I order something if I will get it before my vacation.

3-4 business days of processing usually, followed by 3-4 business days for shipping in my experiences with them

Man, hoping your order arrives before [insert event] is always such a nail-biting experience. I'd almost recommend sticking with the jawnz you have, just to avoid the stress

(unless your trip is like two or three weeks away, then you're fine)
