Price is ridiculously high and fit might be slightly too tight to be the current gold standard.
It's actually the "optimal" fit for millennials who care about how they look, but are not really into fashion (see Magnus Carlsen above). That's Wirecutter's core audience - people who like nicer things, and can be barely bullocksed to search "best X product".

I have a pair of Petit New Standards that I got 8 years ago or so. Denim is nicer than Uniqlo (and other brands at a similar price point) but not that special. Cut is way too low rise, not sure if they’ve updated it. Very slim but not very tapered.

They don’t really fit as I sized down from my usual 32 to a 31 (APC, right?) and I didn’t really notice any stretch, but I resist selling them as the wash (bleached) is really nice, the ones they did in later seasons was not as nice.

I have an old pair of apc somewhere, they did fade very nicely and everything. I prefer the way 501s fit on me (right now) but both cuts have varied over time so this might be random chance. It is true that I am particularly annoyed with the urban millennial average bro jeans fit and want to avoid it. I'm not claiming it is some sort of eternal aesthetic truth, just want to see straighter fits right now.

APC fits are way too low and tight with me, with the exception of the L'Etiquette collab, which is proper high rise/straight leg. Unfortunately the double reinforcement at the waist means these no longer fit me, no matter how hard I try. The 'Standard' is the closest fit to the collab, without the waist reinforcement, so I'm giving them a stab.

AP ... Cs ... received ...

So ... un... comfortable ...
Way back in the day, before APCs were available in independent boutiques, and they were only available essentially by mail order (so, pre-2002) My favorite cut was the "Anglaise" which was a mid-rise, straight leg baggier fit that I though went well with chunkier sneakers. They were discontinued and replaced by another fit (the name of which I now forget) in maybe 2003-2005. They would fit in with the wider leg jeans of 2025, but in the days of Dior slim jeans, they just weren't it.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
