So only after moving to NYC from Kyoto like 5 months ago, I am moving to a new hotel job in LA. NYC was interesting but I think work sucked, and although LA isn't perfect, it at least has nice weather. I am soon going to be Mr.Worldwide

Where in LA? I lived in Pasadena, and it's one of the only places I;ve lived to which I'd move back, though I do wish that I'd bought a house there when I lived there. I would either had a place to live, or a whole lot more money. I like NYC. I actually like NYC more than I did Boston, a place that I thought that I would love when I first visited, and could not have been happier to leave, despite having good friends there. NYC is just too crowded for me, and Manhattan, in particular, the tribes are so defined.. LA, I was definitely the happiest I've ever been in a place there. You can be in the city, but you can also easily get away from the city. You can be with people, but you can also be totally alone. And LA in March is pretty unbeatable for weather.

Also, and maybe this was just my experience - but real Angelenos are pretty accepting people. Ther e is a lot of room for a lot of different people, and people mix and match tribes all the time.

Ah I’m in San Diego, so close to LA. I was born and raised in SD, but have spent almost the last ten years in NYC.. being back here for just a short time I don’t think I can really adjust back to it. Granted, LA is a very different vibe than even San Diego. Somehow, things just feel weird here, or maybe I just outgrew the place in favor of NYC. 🤷‍♂️

I feel the same way about LA. I lived here for about three years and it's my favorite city, by far. I jump on every opportunity to come visit and the thought of moving back regularly comes up for my wife and I. And, being here right now, I can confirm, LA in March is amazing.

I lived in La Jolla on and off in one and two week intervals while doing some collaborative work at UCSD. I had friends in SD, so I'd go into town pretty much every second night. It's very different from LA. Much more bucolic. LOA has a much more different energy, and that energy depends on the neighborhood as well. If the prices were not so insane, I could see myself retiring to SD, but as a younger or singler person, probably not so much. That's just me though.

I'm daydreaming about taking a lazy drive after a hard work out to eat at my favorite Hong Kong style cafe - seafood rice. And then maybe sit outside the cafe on the Caltech campus reading a book and having a coffee and desert. Damn I miss the place.

If you move to Los Angeles, I think you would really like reading Mike Davis' City of Quartz. It's a great lens through which you can view how the city has developed, and many of the themes in that book are relevant today.

I always find it funny how distances like these are considered short in the US. If I drive that distance anywhere I'm either in another country or in the ocean.
Probably because there really isn’t any public transportation or infrastructure to support it. One of the biggest problems is that traffic in Southern California is horrendous. The closer one gets to LA the worse it is at almost all hours. I commuted every weekend for about a year to LA for a year and it was excruciating
