Don't think so. If you're on Jermyn Street, give yourself a good chunk of time to have a proper mooch around as there is sooooo much good stuff to be admired/bought/handled down there and in the surrounding arcades and streets.

I've only been to the Burlington Arcade store and they are nice there, but I don't think I would make it a must visit. I'm assuming that the other stores are bigger though.

I have a few C&J's in Beechnut Burnished Calf. For those of you out there with said color, what are some belt options you go with? I have a few AE belts (chili) that work just fine, but was giving some thought to picking up another one. Thanks.

I just went to the C&J boutique in manhattan. overall price difference was a hundred i just couldn't b bothered. Love the shoes tho. I'm gonna have everything they make on the 348 i swear. already have lowndes, hallam, and tetbury.

The one in New York is two to three times the size of the Burlington arcade one. I feel like the lighting in the New York store is a lot better than the one in Burlington arcade too.

Ya exactly. 365 pounds- vat + 40 pounds shipping comes to about $550 USD, and they were $650. the guy hooked me up because I'm originally from MA and he nixed the tax by using my MA ID

A British (or at least English) tradition, to be fair. Most factories have traditionally had shut-downs over key holiday periods. Not sure if it's still as across-the-board as it used to be, but it's definitely not restricted to .

Didn't mean to imply that it was only a Northants tradition but was just commenting specifically on the traditional shoe manufactureres based in that locale. AFAIK C&J & Trickers also shut for two weeks during the summer aswell. There's something quite civilised about it all what with mass production becoming the norm.

Thanks! Did I read on the C&J website that they refund you the VAT tax when purchasing at the London store, or did I misread that? Is the vat tax paid when you leave the country?

I've been to Europe before, but never really bought anything of large value, however this is a special trip.

So if I bought in person in london and didn't pay shipping - if be looking at about $480 a pair?

I've been to Europe before, but never really bought anything of large value, however this is a special trip.
So if I bought in person in london and didn't pay shipping - if be looking at about $480 a pair?

They will give you a form that you have to submit as you depart. At the airport the 'official' VAT refund office is past the security checkpoint. Here they will review your paperwork, apply the neccesary approval and point you to the 'mailbox' in which you put your completed forms. Your credit card account will be credited with the refund. Avoid the VAT 'shops' that are before the security checkpoint. These are for profit enterprises which will charge you a fee.

Ohhh...so the VAT is charged on my credit card with I intially make my purchase at the C&J store, then C&J gives me the forms that I fill out and drop off at the airport?

Is there another tax that I have to pay at time of purchase that does not get refunded? Are there other chargers associated with making a large purchase and bringing it back to the USA?

Just down the block on Jermyn Street there is a larger, more brightly lit C&J Store. Although I prefer Burlington Arcade as the service is more personal -ask for Mr. Richard Quelch. He's a fine young man who will make certain that you are properly fitted and taken care of. On the outside chance that they don't have something in your size they will have someone run down the block to the other store to get them should they be available there.

When the shoes were GBP 320 that's how much my benchgrade shoes came out to after the currency exchange.

You pay the full amount in store and let them know that you're only visiting and on your trip back you get the HMRC official at the airport to stamp your receipt. Once it's stamped you mail the completed form back to the HMRC. You can and should just do that from the airport. Two months later the VAT amount is refunded to your card. Note that VAT is not 20% of the price you pay. It is 20% of the price before VAT. I think to determine this amount you multiple the purchase price by 7/8.

I actually bought my Drummonds from the Burlington Arcade store. They didn't have my size at that location and I think the sales woman ran around the corner to get my size.
