I like the shell. Suits the clean style of the watch; understated and classy.

I reckon i have only worn alligator leather straps - i must admit it has been ages since i have looked at watch straps, but are those more expensive? Otherwise i would recommend them as they have been very comfortable and good looking.

Would you prefer a padded shell strap over this flat one?

I like this one just fine. Sometimes less is more. But You could go for padded with a contrast stitch for a more sporty flavour.

This is a Raketa, a Soviet-era watch. It's fairly common, and usually costs around $40 on eBay. Hand-winding and keeps pretty accurate time. I adjust it by about 3-5 mins perhaps once in an 8-hour day while wearing it.

I am a collector of Russian / Soviet watches and they are capable of FAR better accuracy than that, 10s or less per day. Your raketa needs a service badly. Check the watchuseek Russian subforum for recommendations on cheap service (less than $50).

That's great to know--thanks. I figured that wasn't so bad. But, honestly, I'm new to the watch thing. Appreciate that info. They're great watches!

@DerangedGoose, just out of curiosity, since you obviously know a lot about this: it's clear my watch needs service. But there are some days when I don't adjust it at all and it's perfect all day. Any ideas why it might be hit-and-miss?

It is common for watches to gain / lose a few seconds in certain positions (gravity pulls differently on the balance), but to see a change of several minutes per day, and relatively even accuracy another day, suggests something out of the ordinary. I am not an expert on these movements, as I have only recently begun to service them, so it would be more useful for you to consult the WUS forum. Enjoy your journey! Russian watches are some of the best value to be had in vintage / modern:

Good evening! I've been browsing this thread for a while, but I'm new to the world of purchasing decent watches. I just won an Ebay auction for this Victorinox ....but I know next to nothing about it. Can anyone help me identify it? Thank you!
