Perhaps the year was meaningful to the owner? I’d wear a watch with my son’s birth year, or my father’s birth year.

No, that's standard on the case. It refers to the year when Longines produced that model for the Czech air force.

How to spoil a gorgeous watch with a totally useless and unattractive detail.

View attachment 1901719

I was just about to say that that is a pretty nice looking watch and then you posted that photo. Oooff!

If I found a second hand one at a low enough price I'd still be tempted though. It's not like 99.99% of people you encounter are ever going to ever see that anyway.

As for the 5 stars - I hated them when I first started seeing them on Longines watches but now I'm sort of indifferent about them.

Longines has been putting out some pretty nice looking watches in the past few years.

I would be curious to see if that is truly removable. If so, perhaps it could be replaced with either a blank plate or something custom like one's initials. But I do agree, it is a needless addition that will dissuade many.

I was thinking the same thing. Maybe remove the little plate and flip it over and reattach it.

I was amazed as I saw that watch and was already considering to buy it, but can't get over that detail, unfortunately. Yes, probably nobody will notice it, but you know it's there.

Nice watch. It would look even better without that red spot on the bezel and the bothering text on the dial, especially "GRAND CLASSIC".
I don't mind grand classic but the "automatic" text is unnecessary. The red spot is traditional on Tutima flieger watches and doesn't bother me at all. I'm sure it has a purpose.

At Longines they're specialists in how to spoil good-looking watches with ugly details.

Here the silly, redundant five stars.

Being retired I should be thinning out my collection but thanks to you I am now obsessed with this watch and the 5 stars 🌟 don't bother me one bit. Maybe if I sell off 4 or 5 from my stash. Easier said than done....
