Ultimately what you wear is up to you but, in my opinion, the burgundy tuxedo is a terrible idea. I've seen on rare occasion a gent look distinguished in a tasteful colored velvet smoking jacket, but it's not the easiest thing in the world to pull off and may well look better on the model than it will on you. If you want to wear a colored jacket, I would stick to black formal trousers, black cummerbund and black bow tie. I wouldn't wear a waistcoat with a more casual jacket. Groomsmen should wear black ties no matter what. There's no reason for them to match their ties to your jacket.

I appreciate the feedback. Just to clarify, what do you mean when you say groomsmen should wear black ties? I take it as bow ties, but wanted to be sure you weren't referring to normal ties.

Bow ties, yes. Always bow ties with a dinner jacket.

Hi All,
My wedding's in January. I've posted previously regarding where to find a DB vest.

What I'm working toward:
Suit - Am having a navy suit made for me through Suit Supply's mtm program
Vest - tan db vest via Charles Tyrwhitt
Shirt - Am thinking I'll do a white shirt w/ french cuffs through Ledbury
Tie - Will purchase one of the wedding tie patterns (Shepherd's check, etc) likely from Kent Wang
Shoes - a pair of CJ marlow wingtips
Other accessories - will wear a pair of cufflinks passed down from my grandfather, will wear a pair of darker purple socks

Groomsmen - have instructed them to wear a dark blue suit, a light-colored shirt (eg white, light blue, etc), brown shoes, and then I'll gift them a tie ---- it's actually been rather tedious to convince my groomsmen to break out of the rent-a-suit-from-men's-wearhouse mold.


What recs might you gentlemen have?

What I did for my groomsmen was I chose a few wedding, silver/grey/black and white ties from Sam Hober's collection, then had my groomsmen rank their favourites. The one that they ranked highest was the one that they got as a gift (I did the ranking just in case there was a tie and I needed to go down to their next ranked preference but it ended up not being necessary). Funny enough, it still ended up being a surprise for them because they had just assumed that they were going to be wearing the same ties.

Best of luck to you. If you're wearing a navy suit and so are your groomsmen, I find the tan vest to be out of place and unnecessary. Did you get it as a means to stand out from your groomsmen?

Agree. I think it's horrendous - sorry.

I think it CAN be pulled off, but it has to be the exact fit/style/body for it to work and even then, I think the chances of pulling it off are slim. You're wearing it to your wedding and to me, that's too big of a risk. You might look back 20 years from now and think WTF was I thinking?

If you want to stand out and want to wear something other than black, I'd go for midnight blue.

Late in posting some wedding pictures from late summer. A casual outdoor camp wedding. I probably broke a few rules, but everyone survived. Wool, linen blend suit (and waistcoat) from SuSu. The rest came from SF Affiliates: Exquisite Trimmings tie, Luxire shirt and Skoaktiebolaget shoes.

Yeah, Midnight Blue. I've never been a fan of black.
