Well the wind was wild when I was walking home last night... Thankfully it wasn't raining so I was able to have my Brigg safely furled and tied closed. I wouldn't have been able to hold it up in the gusts which were absolutely brutal! Usually we get gusts which last a few seconds but last night they were just sustained and must have been up around 60mph at times. I held the crown of my fedora to my head but eventually gave up on that too and held it VERY tightly in my hand. If it had blown off it would surely have been lost forever! At times the wind just blew me to a standstill - I don't think any umbrella would have been safe early yesterday evening - in fact I don't think I could have got an umbrella open in that wind...

Thankyou for your story Lucy J,
you seem to get lots of strong winds in your area.

Those Brigg golf umbrellas have raised a lot in price.
Not long ago they were 130 GBP but now they are 320 GBP.
Why such a large increase?

Total noob here looking to get a decent umbrella. From skimming this thread and reading a bit online, it seems that Doppler umbrellas might be a good fit for me. One question: I see they claim that un-sanded shafts are unbreakable. How true is this? Should I always prefer a shaft that has not been sanded?

Thanks!

Wth is a degradable wood they are using for making their umbrellas? Seems like something that would degrade over the next few years especially with all the water exposure and harsh elements it's suppose to combat?

Looking for a new umbrella. Pickett have polyester ones and Lockwood have cotton ones. I assume the polyester umbrellas are more waterproof?

I have two Longchamp (10-rib) walking umbrellas which have a cotton canopy. They are just as waterproof as my many other polyester/nylon canopy brollies but the cotton canopy does take longer to dry out if it gets a real soaking...

Tomorrow could be a tricky day. I'm doing a 10 mile sponsored walk (which in itself is fine) but we are forecast the arrival of a named storm with 50+ mph winds and very heavy rain.... Obviously I'll need good waterproofs but am wondering which of my collection of large sturdy umbrellas to take... Think it will be either one of my Fox golf umbrellas or my 68inch Gustbuster 💨💨💨💦💦☔️🤞🙏
