A quick Web search suggests they were intended for diving watches:
I’ve always loved diving watches and they along with yacht and chronos make up almost all of my collection both TWATs and PMWs.
When I was a very young lad my older brother had a dive watch with that same checkerboard pattern on the rubber strap which I admired and I wonder if that was the birth of my leaning towards divers. Didn’t know there was a name for those straps so thanks for that info!

Does anyone consider discount sellers like Jomashop, Ashford, WatchMaxxx, Watch Warehouse, etc., reliable? Has anyone in this thread had issues when shopping with them?

I ask, as I've read genuine horror stories about all these. But many of their prices for anything below ultra high end, like Rolex, Grand Seiko, and Audemars Piguet, seem reasonable compared to more mainstream retailers.
