Men's watch at the $5K mark?

Agreed. The date function is a handicap of the Peseux 7001 which the Nomos Alpha movement is based on. It is outdated and clumsy, but Nomos marketing bills it as quaint and charming to have to set the date the long and tedious way. As I mentioned before, such a movement is not in keeping with a watch of that price range. The Peseux is the cheapest manual wind mechanical movement around and so was the default choice when Nomos began.

Some of the older Nomos watches (pre-2008 or 2007 if I recall) do not have the manufacture movement and instead have bought in ebauches used. So this is less desirable from a purist perspective.

The Nomos watches are priced about 2-3x the Stowa Antea (I think one of Stowas cheapest models) so the extra finishing should be a given with the price difference. All that said, I would say Stowa is better value than Nomos considering both use ETA movements (Nomos makes them in-house but the Alpha is based entirely on the Peseux; this does not apply to their other movements which have modules added upon the Peseux design). I like Jorg's service as well, having had experience with his mid-market Schauer brand

Owning both a Nomos (pre in-house) and a Stowa I'd definitely give the edge to Nomos in fit and finish. The Stowa is a hell of a bang for the buck but the Nomos is easily a cut above and justifies it's price, even more so with the in-house movements now.

The input of this thread (and others) helped me make my decision to go with the KS41. The Tangente was just too small for my taste and I didn't want the Nomos date function. The Tangomat (larger) was almost 2k more in price. I might get the Tangomat down the road if I can find it used but they don't seem to come up often. For that matter, neither does the KS41 which I ended up buying new and Stowa does seem to hold resale value well.

Anyway, for now I am pretty happy with the decision. Love the handwind Unitas movement and the larger watch does make a statement. My biggest caveat to others is that the KS41 fits big to use as a dress watch. I've seen many threads say it isn't a problem, it does fit but not well.

I like Omega myself. You can get a very nice Omega for $5K if you shop smart. You could probably get a nice IWC online for that price but I think you get more for your money with Omega. Personally, I've never liked Rolex.

I like Omega myself. You can get a very nice Omega for $5K if you shop smart. You could probably get a nice IWC online for that price but I think you get more for your money with Omega. Personally, I've never liked Rolex.

I know we cant do anything about such prices, but if you ever have to sell your 5k watch do you think you would get your 5k back, lets say 10yrs down the road? I would argue, probably not, even if its a Rolex!

Rolex was my first true luxury watch purchase (1997), I bought it because that was the so called big watch that the affluent owned! I did not know of the other luxury brands at the time! When I eventually looked into other brands and met a few watch makers, many technicians, I kept hearing the name Omega come up many times! But this was long after I sold many of my watches! "In a nut shell," what you said is what they where telling me, but don't tell a Rolex-nut that, they know better than any watch maker

Just some food for thought (and beg pardon if it's already been covered) but $5k opens up some FAR more attractive options on the secondary market as compared with buying new.

Stainless Steel; If I bought @ 5K 10yrs, your saying I'll get 10k or more? Your not talking with a collector here, that I would have to see with my own eyes! Maybe your talking vintage/pre-owned, ok, maybe! Have you been following market trends and such? Do you believe income has risen enough to support someone justifying a 5K watch? And last what is an acceptable profit margin for you gents? 1 buck over what you paid, 30%, or if your like me 300%, now that's real profit and something to be hoarded!
