My band is 14k yellow gold. I was a broke college student when I married my wife, so we got what we could afford and she got me 14k.

Is it worth it to upgrade to 18k or is it one of those things that no one would every notice or care about?

Personally I think the story of why you have a 14K ring is meaningful. I scrimped and saved for over a year as a graduate student to buy an engagement ring. Needless to say, the diamond is not large (but the cut/color/clarity are excellent). We upgraded the setting a number of years ago, but the diamond itself has a lot of meaning to us, so we've never considered changing it.

^^I agree with this, in part because it mirrors my experience. I saved for a year in my first real job to buy my wife's engagement ring (from Blue Nile, which I'd recommend, btw). Over the years, she's upgraded the setting and added other rings, but the original diamond hasn't changed.

So keep the 14k ring that your wife bought when you were both broke; it's more sentimental. Besides, 14k is more durable than 18k and no one will be able to tell the difference without a side by side examination.

This. I'm getting two rings made now, and my jeweler specifically suggested 14k over 18k for the durability since our wedding rings are going to be worn every day.

So to close this out, I tried the Cartier D’amour and 1895 bands as well as the Tiffany milgrain (both solid platinum and platinum/rose) and Classic all in 5/6mm width and platinum. After all of that ended up with the Tiffany classic 6mm pt, which is essentially what I had before.

Yes I know I paid more for the name, but I’m ok with that. Going to wear it for a few days, but my SA and I both think we’ll need to go 1/4 size smaller.

feels good to not have a naked finger anymore :)
