Loafer maintence

I recently bought a pair of SAS loafers, and since they are now discontinued, I want to make sure I maintain these loafers for a long while before I need to buy another pair.

First, what general maintenance should I do to ensure that they stay in top shape? I've been using the inserts to keep the shape when I'm done wearing them, but that's about all I know.

Second, somehow the heel of my one loafer peeled slightly from walking on pavement. I'm not exactly sure how this happened, but I'm assuming it got caught on a jagged edge of the pavement or something. How should I fix this? I've heard about using taps to prevent this from happening again in the future, but I would assume that would affect comfort. Here are pictures to see what I mean:

Take the shoes to a shoe repair shop and have them replace the damaged portion of the heel. Might as well have them replace the same part on the other shoe so they look the same. You mentioned that you're using shoe trees; continue to do that. Do a forum search for one of the dozens of other threads regarding shoe maintenance. Summary--brush clean after wearing, store with shoe trees, wear no more often than once every other day, polish when necessary.
