I recently joined but overall have enjoyed the tfl experience, I’ve learned a lot and already got 4 great jackets that I likely never would’ve known existed otherwise, 2 of which I personally consider grails.

It’s just a different kind of crowd and you can’t really blame folks for siding with the brands/styles/patterns that better suit them and knocking down the ones that don’t, that’s just human nature.
Tell us more about those jackets. 🙂

It’s all a matter of perspective. The negativity towards Five Star over at Fedora Lounge comes from guys who have handled the absolutely best jackets out there, both vintage and new, so it’s understandable that they would see the shortcomings in Five Star jackets. It’s like going to the Iron Heart forum and claiming that Unbranded Brand jeans are absolutely great, they’d probably say “not really, or we wouldn’t be paying IH prices”. At most they might say they’re good… for the price.

FWIW some of my favourite jackets are not FL-approved, in the end what matters is if someone’s happy with with their purchase, who cares what others think.

I never handled a Five Star but they look like good value. But I’ve seen $120 charges just for shipping, which seems excessive, and those of us will get charged with customs duties etc so they won’t be so cheap.
Exactly right. I'm sure the FL guys and others would say my 5* jacket is sh*t.

I'm happy with it.

I guess my question is, go off 5* suggested sizing, or go off their measurement chart? I’m almost always a M, but looks like their S is my usual measured size. Thanks

Tell us more about those jackets. 🙂

First, I wanted a slim fitting light colored shacket but I have broad shoulders and a good taper from chest to waist so I went with tfh after seeing pics there and reading about their fit and got a light pale yellow deerskin western shirt, fits like a glove and works great for warmer weather with a tshirt and jeans.

Second, I wanted a raw hh jacket so I got a rc raw hh cr after learning about rc there and how great it was (leather, pattern, craftmanship, value), it fits great and it’s surprisingly unrestrictive for thick hh, I’m currently putting it out in the sun everyday till it gets to that light caramel stage.

Third, I wanted a really grainy yet tasteful jacket after seeing the y2 bull hide single rider there, but I wanted something more unique and with a better collar, so eventually I found an ewmic barnstormer repro in a monster buffalo hide with some special jp tanning technique, it was a pita to get but fits perfect and it’s surprisingly versatile for dressing up or down.

Fourth, I wanted a half belt and immediately feel in love with the fw deerskin bodie when I first saw it there, I liked the back design plus angle of the hand warmers but mostly the collar as most other half belts usually have big and/or pointy collars and I don‘t like those collars on me, I like short/non-pointy or standing collars only, anyway after assuming I would never find one I was considering going custom but then one popped up and I just got it.

I assume you found out about els there before making your purchase.

I'm a normal M too.
I took a jacket I had that was dialed in, took photos of the areas they asked me to measure with the tape measure laying on the jacket.
Fit turned out close to perfect.

Measure a leather jacket that you have and like the fit of. Find a 5* size that closely aligns. Tweak accordingly.

Nice!

Regarding ELS, I actually came across that brand/jacket when our very own @d4nimal posted a fit in his Instagram.

Gotcha, I‘m not on instagram so hadn’t realized it could be a good place to learn about others brands.

I also found out about thedi on tfl but sadly his smallest stock sz doesn’t fit me and I don’t think I have the patience to wait around a year for my custom jacket to get made, I’d likely be going crazy second guessing all my choices or I’d likely drive Theo crazy making changes and adjustments all along the way.

How long was it with els from order to delivery?

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
