I think he some old leather jacket when he was younger that was “perfect” and he was trying to find that perfect fit.

I think the consensus was that he idealized that jacket… or he was just slimmer back then and things fit better.
It was pretty much his body shape changed and he got bigger in the wrong parts making his jacket not look as good compared to when he was young.

Re. jacket length: it’s heavily dependent on two things: tuck vs no tuck and pant rise. I don’t think it depends that much on the jacket design (e.g. center zip vs cross-zip).

Lately I’ve been wearing higher rise pants and been tucking my t-shirt/shirt more often.

But I never liked when my jackets hit my hips/butt. Plus when that happens either it’s wide enough (forget about taper) or it leads to ugly bunching in the back when zipped.

Honestly the chief issue wasn't even that. It was that he was measuring himself wrong to begin with (about a 42 chest that he was measuring as 38) then he was ordering 38s including Japanese 38s (more like a 34).
Although in the case of the jacket he ripped, despite the poor fit that is more on the maker than on him. If I tried similar on a Schott, Vanson, or Aero, it just wouldn't happen. Some of the Japanese companies use a combination of extremely high stitch count and extremely trimmed leather at the seams. As a result, they will almost certainly rip when facing any pressure. Given the way American workwear guys like to squeeze their way into JDM products, it happens quite often here (though it happens in Japan too).

He had bought approximately 40 jackets of almost all the same style and returned or sold 2nd hand almost all of them. He bought this and wanted fit thoughts. Everyone said too tight. He proved us wrong with the 2 tennis ball test. It was a year long saga.
God, that was a glorious time...

I still haven’t tucked in my shirt with a leather jacket

I've been wearing the hell out of the Double Helix cossack jacket I picked up in Japan. Already showing some tea core in some areas. The DH pattern is deffinately wide in the shoulder, body and arms, but I couldn't imagine wearing a slim horsehide jacket...
