Next MTM project:

I have a little leather jacket project in mind that will probably be in the $1K-1.5K range from Johnson's - I want a leather Lee 101 style leather jacket with a suede collar, probably in black tea dyed leather, and probably in 3.5 ounce leather (I know that they had a leather like that when I went in). It would be nice to get it with a zip in shearling lining for the winter too. I think that the jacket alone would be under $1K, but the liner that will probably add to the price considerably.

Don't you already have an RRL gambler jacket that's pretty similar?
The gambler jacket that I have is brown and it doesn't have the suede collar. I want something that is essentially black, and the thing that will be special will be the suede collar. The gambler is simply rugged. I want this jacket to have a bit of the gentleman rogue in in, with small dandyish touches here and there.

Sounds sweet but im not sure about the bulk of shearling for that. Maybe a mackinaw liner instead? Hmmm...

I think that it's interesting that the term "lancer front" is still used in England, an interesting cultural artifact

I should confess that hardly anyone uses it now, apart from historians or the guy who measures you for custom bike leathers. I'm fairly sure I'm the only Englishman campaigning for its preservation. Here the general public thinks of the DR/Lancer as just a "biker jacket". Every time a biker-style fashion jacket is released, it has the Lancer front. And people associate the look more with Kate Moss than Marlon Brando or James Dean, who are pretty much forgotten. Kate deserves commission for every Lancer jacket sold. Even sites for bikers can't make up their mind what term to use - they go with retro/classic/cruiser/vintage, but never lancer. Nearly all bikers go for a straight zip, which they see as modern. They associate the diagonal zip with Harleys, which are not really bikes, just props for gay middle-aged leather fetishists.

The Germans had a huge influence on bike gear but that tends to be overlooked - the Brits and Americans want to take all the credit. Germany was also supposedly the first place to start series production of motorcycles. I'm still kicking myself for missing out on this '40s German jacket which recently went for £135/$180.

I'm really liking this Acne shearling jacket, but not sure of the quality. I like the sweater, too.

I'm such a sucker for shearling.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
