Thanks for the response.

If you or anyone else knows: I have a Sail Rigger Tailored fit in Medium, which fits with a bit of room. I also have a Canvas gingham from a couple of years ago in medium that fits but is kind of tight. I'm looking for something similar in fit to my Sail Rigger. Would you guess a medium in the washed oxford would be in this range? thanks

Based on my experiences the medium washed oxford will fit similarly to your tailored medium sail rigger but slightly looser in the chest.

Yeah. But on the plus side, LE now offers slim fits on a lot of their mainline clothes. It's pretty much the same thing, and I was never impressed enough by Canvas to buy anything other than basics, which were/are cheap as dirt and pretty well made. Plus the slim tapered chinos fit me like they were MTM...

I've been trying out the LE slim fit shirts but haven't found them to fit as well as the LEC stuff. I can only describe the fit as "weird" -- wide shoulders and super tight mid-section. Not flattering at all. Somehow the LEC stuff always felt just right. Oh well, with the discounts J. Crew offers these days.... it's not a huge loss.

I still have some LEC pieces that I love and still wear regularly but yes, for the most part I've upgraded to J Crew's mainline stuff as well for casual clothes. Mostly a matter of more consistent fit season after season (mostly I just buy variations of a few staples).

Canvas was just too hit or miss in the fit and/or fabric department and I started to feel bad returning about 40% of online purchases to the nearest Sears.

Yeah, I found the same thing w/ the LE slim fit dress shirts (both oxford and pinpoint oxford) when buying my true neck size: the arm hole orientation somehow limited my arm movement (even though the shirt looked like it fit decently) . Sizing up in slim didn't help either. For low-cost shirts, I've stuck with the LE tailored fit (stepping down a half neck size for a better fit in those shirts that I don't plan on wearing with a tie). The construction of the 'regular' Lands' End shirts seems much better than the LEC stuff (stitching, fabric quality, etc...).

So the consensus is that if not planning to wear the shirt with a tie, sizing half-size down from the true neck size for tailor fit is the way to go?

It really depends on your build... LE usually puts their shirt measurements online. I'd buy a few sizes in slim and tailored fit and just see what works for you. They're rather inexpensive and returns are easy.

Would anyone in this thread be interested in a bunch of size M LEC shirts in various styles? Purging my size Ms since they're all too tight in the chest and short in the arms. Just click the thumbs up button, and if I get some interest, I'll post pics.

Is Lands End still making LEC items?

It looks to me like LEC was some sort of "stepping stone" to pull in new/younger customers. They seem to have pretty much phased LEC out, at least branding wise now. Now theyr'e transitioning to more "tailored fit" items in less conservative styles but with regular LE branding. Kind of an odd way to go about it and message to your audience, but there's a lot we don't know.... like was LEC not successful for the company? I'm guessing it wasn't based on it's unceremonious death.

Sounds about right.
I remember getting $3 tees and <$15 coats. They definitely were not making huge sums of $.
Too bad. I saw real potential.

Eddie Bauer did the same thing where for a few years there they were making really cool (to me at least) retro heritage offerings. But I think they realized there wasn't much money in it and they're back to hocking dad jeans with elastic waistbands.

I remember that too.
LL bean sig. looks to keep going, but there fit never seems to work for me.
