Dude, he looks fine.

This is for a first job, not a senior position at an investment bank...

You look a lot better than I did in my first interview out of college and I got the job. Best of luck.

The jacket is not a wonderful fit (note next time please) but I am sure that most interviewers will not notice and be more than 'happy' with your appearance. Go to your interviews in confidence.

Some of these Boards do not adequately reflect the current time: Anyone setting off in life has to start somewhere and you start point will certainly not let you down: After all I have yet to find a suit which actually does the job rather than the wearer.

I have only seen one suit as you describe...I think you need to say go-go gadget and it starts doing due diligence for you. Maybe not.

I agree with the idea that he is doing pretty well with what he has at this point. OP should take the small changes that have been suggested and implement them at will. I don't think he has to do any wholesale change...small things, like the sleeve length and the jacket size stand out to me (but I'm usually just lurk here to learn).

Nowhere near as bad as your gucci ties.

I think it would be wise to be realistic here.

probably best to have at least a few flaws for a first interview at a beginning position.

I think they like to see you look nice, but they dont always like it when they find out your wearing an $1800 italian suit, private tailored, and they're wearing a $300 suit their wife bought from the mall that was hemmed by the staff.

So i think the BN suit is perfect for it, slim cut, but nothing too over the top. Same with the shoes, they're nice, but they're not the $300+ shoes seen on this forum, even allen edmonds are pretty swanky for most jobs, reguardless of the opinions posted here. The park aves are pretty subtle, but they're still $300 shoes.

Hot damn, I'll take TWO!! And the outfit looks fine, although - depending on where you interview - I'd personally keep it a little more conservative (different tie, barrel cuffs, no pinstripes, etc.).

Sorry I may have been using one of the terms wrong.

I assumed "drop" meant the difference between chest measurement and waist measurement. I now am starting to think it means the difference between the tagged suit jacket size and pant size.

I think you'll find with most people that lift frequently that the measured difference between chest and waist is much greater than the appropriate difference between jacket and pant size. This is due to the fact that the chest measurement grows very quickly when lifting, while shoulders do not. Before I lifted at all my chest was 36 inches, but my shoulders were only slightly smaller, so my appropriate jacket was around 36s. Now that I've put on 30 lbs of muscle my chest has grown 5 inches, but my shoulders have grown much less, and it appears my jacket size hasn't changed.

I think this is one of the inherent problems with the way suits are sized. I guess ideally they would be based on a shoulder width measurement, but since this would be nearly impossible to do alone its too impractical.

And to the best of my knowledge, 41/29 are my measurements. I use a myotape which is a pretty handy tool of measuring yourself: http://www.bodybuilding.com/store/acc/myotape.html
If I retract my shoulder blades and push my stomach out I can get to 39/30, but thats a pretty big inconvenience just to make it easier to find clothes.

I have hired lots of people in my career of all ages and experiences, mostly in finance. Anyone that interviews with clothes from the Banana Republic goes in the clerk pile. If that is what you want, then there is no need to change. If you want to be considered an aspiring young professional, get clothes from JAB or better. Banana Republic says I am not ready to grow up yet.

So what your saying is that a crappy suit that doesnt fit from Joseph A. Bank is better then a slim fitting suit from BR?

Wow, i dont wear BR, but IMO it looks much nicer then any of the bags JAB sells.

At what stage of the interview do you ask to examine the label on the suit?

As for this suit I guess I'll do nothing besides re-hem the pants myself. My dad owes me a $500 suit anyways so maybe I'll get a TaT and just tell them to keep it conservative.

I guess from now on I'll swallow my pride and try on mostly 36 shorts, even if they're a little tight in the chest/lats, the shoulders will fit better and the pants will probably be right on.

Doug - BEWARE OF TIES FROM MOM! - or, generally, from wife/girl friend for that matter.

Then you have long done your employer a disservice. Never judge a book by its cover and never assume that simply because someone shops in place A rather than your preferred B that they lack judgement or skill. The more so when someone is setting out in life.

Anyway are they all required to show you the label in their suits or do they have to record that on the application/CV for you?

Jesus, guess I should get my pants tailored for a triple break and the waist let out before I interview.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
