They are different events with very different training and generally require or produce different body types.
Distance runners run alot more mileage than sprinters, and its hard to put on and maintain muscle mass when you are running 10+ miles a day. Plus, its beneficial for the marathoner to be as light as possible without sacraficing performance (being underweight and being too weak).

Most sprinters do quite a bit of strength training and weight-lifting. Most distance runners do very minimal strength training, maybe a few plyometrics and some core work, but not much that would actually add any bulk.

Yesterday afternoon i did 4x .6 miles @ about 5'10 pace then an easy .6 miles for a cool-down (would have liked to do a few more repeats but was rushed for time). Then ran for 60 min. at night (9.1 miles).

Been trying to get myself to consistently do speed-work now that the weather is nicer, i feel like ive lost a bit of speed over the winter.

3.5 - maintenance day. Live in nYC, cannot wait to run in just t-shirt and shorts again.

5.75 yesterday at about 8:30 pace. man, heat is the great equalizer. it wasn't even very hot, low 70s. but damn, that run was difficult near the end.

6X1200 @ 4:33 (6:04 pace, but it's intervals)

About 40 F, very light drizzle. I tried racing flats for the first time ever, and liked them: Mizuno Wave Ronins, bright red and light (probably 4 oz lighter than my Mizuno Wave Riders). I will try 15 miles in them in a week and might wear them for Boston.

^ I see alot of people wearing the ronins at races.
Ive tried alot of different flats flats and ive found i like Nikes the best. For marathon i used the Nike Katana IV (they dont make it anymore) which is a little more cushioned than most flats but lighter than most performance trainers and they worked well. Ive also worn them for a half.
For short races i use the nike Katana racer... i love that shoe.
GeoPa, do you ever do any shorter races?

Today i ran 20 miles in just under 2:15 (6'45 pace). The first 10 the wind was brutal and felt like it was always either against me a cross wind. The last 10 i actually felt better than the first 10. The wind died down but it helped when it was at my back. Towards the end i was feeling pretty good and ran the last 3.5 or so at about 6'20 pace. I would have liked to go longer, but the sun was going down and i was feeling a little underdressed and was afraid of getting chills.
Oh, and i took a gel with me but didnt use it.

Awesome jwied82! Today, once again, I ran the for the longest I have ever run. 18 miles in 2:43 and change. I need to pick it up if I want to come in under 4 hours for the marathon in May. No major pains but my legs feel like taffy after mile 15.

18 was the longest i did before my first marathon, and the 20 today was my longest run ever
excluding that race. I remember on the 18 miler my legs were feeling weak the last few miles but today i really felt stronger the last 30 minutes than i did the rest of the time.... probably a result of smarter pacing and a cooler temperature.

But I doubt im going to run a faster time this time around though (Marathon is in mid april), my overall mileage is lower and my speed endurance isnt as good.
