Today was the first time in my life I have ever gone to a drycleaners and had to pay. My parents owned a chain of 6 drycleaners up until a few years ago and even after they sold it I got my drycleaning done for free by the people who bought their stores. Today I had to go elsewhere to get my drycleaning done because I needed it done in 2 days and I didn't want them to make me a priority since I don't pay. Boy was I in for a surprise!

2 coats - $16 each, $32
reinforce buttons on coat - $9
1 scarf - $6
1 down coat - $29.50!!!
1 pant - $7.25
4 shirts - $2.35 each, $9.40
2 polos - $6 each, $12
4 sweaters - $6.75, $27
Total - $132.15

I remember when we had our cleaners, we charged $1.25 for shirts, $3.00 for pants, $3.50 for sweaters/blouses, $10 for coats, etc. I know that costs to run drycleaners have gone up (hanger prices have multiplied) but wow! My parents put 5 kids throught private school and college and the prices they charged. Prices today, they could put a whole village through school.

Did I overpay at this place? or are these prices the norm these days?

Prices seem a bit higher than usual, even as compared to DC or NYC.

Yeah that's pretty damn expensive. The dry cleaners near me charge $2.49 per piece regardless of what it is.

I'd be afraid to bring more expensive items to this guy.

Weird, I have never heard of a flat per-item price across the board.

I've been checking other places in my area that have been awarded "Best of Boston" by Boston Magazine. The prices I paid are similar to these other places give or take $.25.

I always wonder if I can return the wire hangers they give me? It seems like they should be able to use them again, but then again some people would probably complain...

I always return the wire hangers. They're always very appreciative. And I hate waste.

The most expensive I've come across (other than hotel cleaning services) was Del Monte in Toronto -- Etobicoke to be exact. I went there just once in 2000 on the advice of a friend. He didn't mention the prices, just that they did a great job. I brought in two suits and three shirts, and left with a bill of about $75. They sure did a nice job, but I think this was more than my clothes were worth.

There was this dry cleaning place that used to charge $5.95 for pants. The good thing about them was that they picked up and delivered from your work place. Their shirt service was $1.49 per shirt. But yea, those prices you paid seem a bit high.
