HOF: What Are You Wearing Right Now - Part IV (starting May 2014)

I wore this a little bit ago for a senior seminar presentation (so it wasn't technically what I was wearing today) and was hoping for a general opinion on the combination of the suit, shirt, and tie (without starting an unnecessary new thread). My girlfriend didn't like it, but my roommate thought it was OK and he and I both work in men's retail.

Thank you for posting. I'm sorry to say that I do not believe this is a good combination. The shirt is casual and should never be worn with a tie. The darkness of the shirt also creates a very low contrast with the jacket which makes the fit look muddled. The tie is generally bad and does not tie in well with anything else. The preponderance of large patterns on the shirt and tie makes it look like a modern art masterpiece (IE not good). Next time try to be a lot simpler with your choices. A light blue shirt and a simple striped tie would have gone a long way to improving your look. Keep posting and let us see what you come up with!

This is exactly why I asked. I already had reservations about it because of my girlfriend, but thank you for giving me more concrete criticism. The shirt was a purchase I think I was just so excited to wear right away that I jumped the gun with it. I have actually done the striped tie, light blue shirt combo many times and is my typical go to for interviews and presentations, but I wanted to switch things up. I still like the tie (I know larger paisleys are frowned upon, but I just can't help myself), but I'll definitely stick to wearing more conservative things around it. Thank you again, and I think I'll keep these particular items separated from here on.

Where did you get an HF suit with such wide lapels? I have a Madison with lapels that only reache a hair past halfway between collar and shoulder. Was it MTM?

Nothing wrong with wanting to mix things up. There are patterned shirts that can be worn very well with a jacket and tie. Darker shirts are nearly always a no-go however. Stripes, micro-check, and windowpane shirts are often used to great affect with a jacket/tie.

I have some great light blues with those patterns that I'll give a try next time.

+1 to HW. I use FIH more often, but will still wear HW regularly. Really depends on the tie. I have some which simply look better with a HW. I also tend to use HW more with wider lapels. And longer ties (such as older Henry Carter) where the tie "pen0r" would be too much even for me.

I'll second this. Some of my ties just work better tying a particular knot. Also, I'm fairly short and some of my ties are too long, so the extra usage of a HW can make the difference.

Thanks for the critique! I think it may be a combination of the iPhone and a mirror pic that is throwing off length of the jacket and pants. The pants actually have a slight break, but I see what you mean about them looking like floating pants.

I felt like the shirt was alright since it wasn't a pattern overload. and I've done solid shirts the past few times I've posted so I wanted to mix it up a bit.

Your recommendation for the square fold I definitely agree with, I was having a hell of a time getting all of the edges to line up and eventually gave up to go with this since it was easier
