I'm not sure what the best analogy is...the slaves or his own legions. If the latter, then really it's not so bad since only one out of ten were crucified.

It's difficult to tell, true. Legionaries were clean-shaven. Perhaps R shaved off his beard to disguise himself as one and improve his odds?
