I think those things absolutely, đź’Ż, ROCK! I love them!

With that being said, I have not seen a pair worn in. I thought Shell Cordovan rolls vs. getting creases like regular leather.

I know what everyone is thinking if they have read to this point. It's leather, embrace it, they're meant to be worn, not all leather is the same, etc, etc. I đź’Ż get that as well, and I do love how these look.

I am honestly just inquiring. Is the creasing on these a normal characteristic of Shell Cordovan?

Thanks

Matt, this is not shell cordovan, it's chromexcel in Havana brown which GS calls crimson. These crease quite heavily on first wear itself. The boots in the picture are just on its second wear and you can see how much it's creased already. Its just how chromexcel patinas.

@basu13 Thank you. Dude, those things shine so much. I totally missed the title.... So Shell Cordovan just doesn't crease? I know I could go to the internet, but I like the combined knowledge and honesty here.

This crimson CXL in particular really shine up well, they came out gleaming out of the box. However, I assume the shine will subdue with some more wear and patina. A pic of my Ottawas in the same leather below, shining quite well too.

Im not a shell expert but I believe shell rolls and creases only minimally or not at all. Will let shell cordovan experts elaborate.

I know these are CXL, but those look like they have a very nice roll effect going on!

Natural shell cordovan by a few different makers. The red laces are in GS Ottawas. Some footwear roll more than others. Some amazingly show little or no rolls after significant wear. Luck of the leather draw, I guess.
First off, that is a amazing collection!

You know I zoomed in. Your loafers on the bottom left have that beautiful roll I imagined. Your right ottowa has a bit more of a defined roll matching where your foot bends. Those chukkas seem to be favored, and those rolls remind me of the waves in Redondo Beach, smooth!

Thank you for sharing that leatherporn!

Speaking of rolls on CXL, here are some rolls on my natural CXL Ottawas (along with typical CXL creasing). I call it the poor man's shell!

I dig those! It's strange how Ottawas no longer seem so off-putting to me. Do you, or anyone else here, use the deer bone or spoon method to smooth out creases? I did a little with the a spoon on my Saddle Tan Firld boots. It showed some promising results right in the middle lower creases right here. Just learning and experimenting.

Another leather than tends to roll rather then crease seems to be Kangaroo leather. Here is photo of my natural roo ottawas, that sadly did not quite work out for me size-wise, and are for sale now. I love how this leather rolls - it seems to have smaller rolls than shell cordovan more reminiscent of ripples - but it still resists wrinkles quite hard. As far as non-cordovan-actually-leather shoes go... I think roo veg tag is a complete opposite of typical CXL leather that is expected to wrinkle (but sometimes surprisingly does not).

And yes, I used to strongly dislike Norwegian Split Toe. At this point, not even sure why - it is awesome LOL

@basu13 Very sharp looking! I really like Grant Stone, unfortunately they are difficult to purchase if you live outside the US.

Thanks. Im not in the US in fact quite on the opposite side of the globe, and yes one does end up paying quite a bit of duties. I usually buy the B grades or during the sales and that reduces the pinch substantially.

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
