Whoop dee doo. You get a gold star

No gold star needed. Just gets tiring tending to the sheep that think everything new is great.

but for reals, 40+ million active users ain't no joke.

No it's not but those numbers are declining fast and many of the people that have an account aren't even active users.

So, uh, what's the point of google+?

I believe that is jmrouse's point. It was meant to be a better version of facebook but people are satisfied with FB as is.

Bingo. Google + is "better," but FB is good enough. People are not being compelled to leave it for Google's offerings.

Is anybody still using this? Google announced today that they're offering free phone calls to your "friends"

Give it time... Google is pushing this everywhere with all their services. In a year I wouldn't be surprised if people just use it because it's in their face all the time...

Thought this feature had been around... all year?

Haven't been back to G+ since I first opened the beta account. No desire whatsoever to return.

Exactly the same for me, got an invite, opened an account, then thought "Well what I do I do now?" I'm already social enough on the internet with my friends via Skype and things..

I'm sure the phone calls are USA only, which is usually the way. Google Voice, US only, which has been around for a while.

Google+ has rolled out a new design. Big improvement in my opinion.

The problem with Google + is that while it's design and function are improved over Facebook's in many ways, nothing about it is a lot better. You can't present the public with a slightly superior product and expect them to change their habits for it. Your product has to be, without question, a great deal better. It needs to be obvious and compelling. Google + was not that.

I believe at this point, it may be too late and no longer think they have a real shot at making this service take off. The hype over Google + is gone and the conversation has moved on.
