Completely unrelated, but this chart on Wikipedia shows why people who think we should colonize Mars are idiots:

Earth blocks dangerous, high energy waves like gamma rays and X-rays plus it has a magnetosphere which makes it impossible for it to hold an atmosphere (which also helps protect it from meteorites and the like).

Its a shame people are focused on Mars when Venus is actually a far more reasonable option (obviously not on the surface).

For Venus, you would live in the clouds. NASA actually put out a paper about 20 years ago. It is actually easier because of the density of the atmosphere an weaker gravity. At altitude the temperature is actually temperate (about 20C at 50km). Plus, it is a lot closer to Earth, so the fuel requirements and travel time is a lot less (and being 50km off the surface makes it easier to leave Venus's gravity well).

The biggest problem is the highly acidic and corrosive atmosphere.

Half of those things require Algebra to actually fully understand...or are simply math you already should know by that point.

I see a lot of those memes from a particular sort of Millennial, and they've always annoyed me. There's a "life is complicated and it's the government's fault I didn't know all of it right out of high school" angle to it.

K-12 education is never going to provide you with all the skills you need to succeed in life, and it's dumb to try to make it so. You definitely learned about complex interest in math, it's not your math teacher's fault you can't figure out how to apply it to loans (despite assuredly doing example problems of exactly that).


Plus a lot of financial success is a values question, not so much education.

The same people probably ***** about "new math" too...

Even though maybe if they had been taught math in a way that more broadly emphasized problem solving techniques + word problems rather than rote memorization and equations, they might have an easier time recognizing that they actually could figure out how to puzzle out their budget problem.

Also...we have ******* youtube and google on smartphones now. If you can't remember how to calculate interest or figure out how to negotiate a salary...someone wants to teach you.

Half of these...they do teach in school in some form?

Coding is present in many schools.
Social etiquette is definitely there (maybe not a course on which fork to use at a formal dinner, but half of getting through school is learning how to interact with others along the way)
Stress Management certainly gets taught some in an ad hoc way (and trial by fire...)
Insurance and Personal finance are mostly just math/logic/reading and often ARE briefly taught in some social studies class (that everyone promptly forgets)
Public Speaking is 100% taught at every school...giving a presentation is a classic assignment...

Some of the others HAVE fallen out of favor. Cooking, Shop class, etc. Some schools may still have them, but they have mostly gone missing. Not sure that's the worst thing though...what do you give up to get them back? I'd rather do typing and then coding than have kids making bird houses and then learning how to do brake jobs...

And the last two...Self Defense and Survival Skills? Ok...maybe some things are just not meant to be learned in school. Violence is a touchy subject and survival skills would probably end up being 100% useless if taught in a school environment. In middle school we did go to an "environmental camp" where we had to do some things like light fires...but honestly I doubt anyone retained that knowledge who didn't already know it from other places like Boy Scouts.
