Friday Challenge 20130628: In the Pink

I recommend that we take a break this week in deference to the likely impact of U.S. Independence Day on participation. o/o can pick up again for next week.

How does that sound to everyone?

I still say we do the patriot challenge...national colors. I'd be interested in seeing Clap working with Germany's colors and Betel working with Mexico's.

I'm glad od/ot won this, not because I didn't like what Butler was wearing - it was as lovely as always - but I always feel like Butler gets more votes simply because of the outstanding quality of his bespoke suits, and for me, that's not what these challenges are all about.

He was saying that many of your votes came from your amazingly well tailored clothes rather than your use of pink. The challenges should focus on a specific aspect in a larger context, but in your case, the halo effect of the larger context (the fantastic suit) overly impacts how we perceive the specific aspect (how the shirt is used).

That being said, I did cast a vote for Butler.

I think cancelling the challenge would be rather unnecessarily US-centric (as someone who normally has to participate on his day off anyway!). The national flag colours would be interesting, if horrific. Perhaps, and this does go against my taste in many ways, it would be helpful to Ameriganos if we did national flag colours in MC casual? That way nobody has to be too overdressed for their barbecue (like there's any such thing), but we still have a theme that's more interesting than chinos and polo shirts.

Everyone needs to keep in mind that this is SF, with SF tastes and SF prejudices operating in the votes. In all of these challenges, your adherence to the theme is what qualifies you and gets you in the poll, but other elements are as important or more important in getting you votes. If you have poor quality pictures, you aren't going to do well. If your clothes don't fit or the fit/cut deviates too much from SF tastes, you won't do well. In a perfect world, maybe votes would be based solely on execution of the theme, but this isn't a perfect world, this is SF. And the challenge polls, like WAYWRN, don't indicate who is actually well dressed, they indicate who SF thinks is well dressed.

If Claghorn is right, it seems to me:

That in his opinion, the members are not able to abstract from a good fitting suit, to decide whether the challenge's criteria has been met and how it stands up to the other participants

or

members with "amazingly well tailored clothes" should stay away and not participate in these challenges.

In the first instant I personally have more respect for the members abilities, and the second is contradicting quite a few requests I have received from members, who would like to see more tailored clothes in general and in the challenges in particular.

Who knows!

Mr Butler, I'm quite sure he meant something along the lines of the first point - but perhaps meant in a way less pejorative to fellow members, i.e. that we are all partially blinded, now and then, by the excellence and variety of your tailoring!

I am even more certain that nobody here tires of seeing it, though. Mr Claghorn will speak for himself, but I suspect he might have retired for the day given the time difference.

Currently on a cruise. Finally got some wifi. Wow. 4th place. Much appreciated. I thought matching shirt and bow tie with lapel flower would not go over in SF land. I wonder if my second attempt would have gotten me closer to third? Thanks again.

I was suggesting the first; you have more faith in our membership than I. But count me among those who wish you to post as many possible pictures and participate in as many possible contests.

I was not meaning to impugn you in any way, merely clarify (and agree with) what another member had posted with regards to your fit vs. o/o's. We are without a doubt better for your presence and participation.
