Call after break-up?

Broke it off with a GF of over a year. She moved out on Wednesday and I've not spoken with her since. She moved back to her hometown. We are on good terms, we actually split in November and she's basically just been living with me making feeble attempts to work things out until I told her she needed to move home. She is pretty broken up about it though, more than me. She was really scared about never seeing or talking to me again. I reassured her that I wouldn't cut her off. I know she's probably been a complete wreck the last couple days.

Well her birthday is Sunday. Not sure if I should call, or email. Not sure what the lines of communication should be at this point. What's appropriate?

Given that you are on speaking terms, I would absolutely call, maybe send a card.

Why is this an issue? If you're still friends on speaking terms at least a call is appropriate.

Were you friends before you dated? Do you have an independant basis for a friendship?

I have never stayed friends with an ex before. I have tried to stay in contact with some but it has never worked for me even though at the time of the breakup it seemed unfathomable that I would just stop talking to the person I broke up with.

More recently I have decided that even though I feel like I am being nice by continuing to talk to an ex, I am really only slowing down the healing process. But then again, I have never been friends with a girl before I dated her so ymmv.

You split - that's it.

Everything else creates problems, hurt or - even worse - some lukewarm reconcilitation.

Call her if you still care about her. If you don't, then don't.

I'll give her a call. Thx for the input. No chance of reconciliation, we live on different coasts now. I agree it's pretty impossible to remain friends, but I think it will be OK to still be acquaintances.
