Hey Gentlemen,
After an extensive search for the perfect, high-quality over-the-calf sock, I’ve put together some serious findings that I think you’ll appreciate. Over the last few months, I've tested various brands and models , and I’m here to share my preliminary results with the community. A few reviews are still "outstanding," but here's where things stand for now. I’d love to hear your thoughts and recommendations, so feel free to chime in!
So far, Mazarin Merino Wool (80% Merino, 20% Polyamide) is the frontrunner for me. However, I’m eager to give Bresciani (and maybe Corgi) a try before making my final decision.
Looking forward to your thoughts and recommendations!

My Criteria for my preferred Sock
Here’s what I’m looking for in a sock—anything that didn’t meet these standards didn’t make the cut:- Use Case: Suitable for daily business wear (no casual styles), ideally paired with dark blue trousers or suits.
- Length: Over-the-calf only; nothing less.
- Material: Wool-based (Merino preferred) to prevent moisture—cotton just doesn’t work for me.
- Color: Strictly navy or dark blue.
- Style: Ribbed whenever possible; I find it adds a touch of elegance.
- Price: Max 40 CHF per pair.
The Brands and My Ratings
Here’s the lineup and my results so far:Brand | Material | Price | Currency | Ribbed | Rating | Review | URL |
Black Socks | 75% Merino Wool, 25% Polyamide | 20 | CHF | ✓ | Dropped | Unfortunately, no over-the-calf option in this material composition. | Link |
Falke Lhasa Rib Kaschmir | 33% Merino, 27% Viscose, 20% Polyamide, 20% Cashmere | 36 | CHF | ✓ | ** | A good sock, but very warm due to the cashmere blend. I would not wear it on a daily basis. | Link |
Airport Falke Merino | 53% Merino, 27% Cotton, 20% Polyamide | 32 | CHF | ✓ | * | Broke down early; cotton mix feels damp. Disappointing quality. | Link |
Falke Teppich Merino | 70% Merino, 30% Polyamide | 33 | CHF | ✓ | *** | Good for winter boots but too thick and warm for daily use. My pick for winter, but not year-round. | Link |
Mazarin Super Durable Merino | 65% Wool, 35% Polyamide | 27 | Euro | ✓ | **** | Sleek design (two colour tone), thicker than others, making it too warm for everyday wear, but still a solid choice. | Link |
Mazarin Merino Wool | 80% Merino, 20% Polyamide | 24 | Euro | ✓ | ****** | My top pick so far. Elegant ribbing design and top-notch quality with unique details like colored entry lining. | Link |
Corgi Merino | 63% Merino, 37% Nylon | 25 | Euro | ✓ | Outstanding | Awaiting review as the navy color wasn’t available. | Link |
MEN'S METROPOLITAN | Aqua FX Moisture Control | 17 | Euro | ✓ | Dropped | Not available for shipment to Europe. | Link |
Pantherella Smithfield | 72% Merino, 27% Nylon, 1% Lycra | 19 | GBP | ✓ | ***** | Excellent feel and fit; feels like walking on a cloud. Sadly, the mesh top ruined the ribbed look for me, especially when wearing loavers. | Link |
Pantherella Laburnum | 70% Merino, 30% Nylon | 18 | GBP | ✓ | **** | High quality with a great fit. Missing the cushioned bottom of the Smithfield model. | Link |
Bresciani | 80% Wool, 20% Nylon | 27 | Euro | ✓ | Outstanding | Pending review. | Link |
Gamarelli | Dropped | Limited color palette; no navy option available.
Gallo | Dropped | Only one wool option, but not my style.
Palatino | 24 | Euro | ✓ | Outstanding | Outstanding quality, but the blue available is too light for my taste. | Link |
Test Notes
These socks were tested over > 3 months. I washed them at 30-40°C with standard detergent—no special care, as I expect them to handle real-world use.So far, Mazarin Merino Wool (80% Merino, 20% Polyamide) is the frontrunner for me. However, I’m eager to give Bresciani (and maybe Corgi) a try before making my final decision.
