I have increased the number of boots in my closet and my rotation this fall and I have a stupid question.

When wearing some boots, the top of the boot shaft rubs against the side of my leg, above the ankle and that spot can get quite sore by the end of the day. This is especially true on days that I commute by train and do a lot of walking.

The obvious answer is to not tighten the laces but that's uncomfortable in a different way. I simply don't like a loose fit.

Any thoughts from the experienced boot wearers (bootsters?) on this?

He he I am going through the same thing at present and it has a lot to do with breaking in new footwear I believe. Once you go past that humo you should be fine. My other workaround was the fold the top of my socks back downwards so that the top of the boot closes over two layers of sock. Less work than actually wearing two pairs. Worked well when I was breaking in a pair of red wings recently.

Ah. Terrific suggestion re: folding over the socks. Thank you.

Thanks for the comparison pictures.

That last number looks unfamiliar to me, and there is no mention of it on the Cheaney website site either. Maybe it is a custom last just for the Hoggs of Fife. They do look similar to Cheaney's 4436 last though, maybe a tad longer.

I e-mailed Cheaney to check the differences between last 12226/G and 4436/G.

This is their response:

Thank you for your e-mail.

I have checked with the production team into the difference between the lasts and been advised the following:

Looking at it there is very little difference between the two, The 12226G is slightly wider and longer but the difference is so slight they will feel very much the same in size and fit.

One of my favorite autumn-winter combos - black C&J Tetbury chukkas and undyed heavy twill De Bonne Facture Hiking Trousers…
