I've been watching that and the comments with interest. And still waiting for @fxh to tell us about Portergate....
I think its covered by the Offical Secrets act. PoP did mention the Chinese involvment in passing.

ive just posted on that P Johnson thread, and also have a pending comment on permanent style. its pretty outrageous. I appreciate it doesn't change the suit at all, and I have nothing against stuff made in asia, but I don't appreciate being lied to. they felt they had to lie to me in order to hand over $1600 (and I have four suits), and thats a pretty disgusting business to be running.

Thanks to globalisation (read, no or low tariffs and very cheap shipping) most industries consolidate in one global location, where all the talent and know-how and investors concentrate. Right now, Italy dominates the RTW manufacturing industry. There is nothing that will stop the PRC from taking over. They just need to figure out the IP, get enough people trained, and then ship them back and pay them large salaries to scale the factories in Guangzhou or whatever (it helps that a good portion of knowledge is already present in the thriving HK market). Apple products are made in the PRC (by Foxconn, a Chinese company) and they are the finest consumer manufactured object on the market (tightest tolerances, best QC, etc.).

The only reason it wouldn't happen is if the IP transfer doesn't happen; the Chinese have not as of yet cracked how to design processors or stealth fighters (beyond copying whatever they "obtained" from the US), and it's an open question whether the Chinese are incapable of this kind of value added work. I stand on the side of those who think it is only a matter of time as Japan has shown, from third world country with not a wall standing in many cities, to the enormous market share in say, architecture they have globally today.

I don't begrudge PJ for seeing the writing on the Italian wall and trying to be a first mover in "high quality made in the PRC".

Funnily enough I was thinking about what coffee beans to buy next and saw that BeanBay has a Chinese origin. The country of tea is now growing single origin coffee as well.

RM Williams are back from Roger (who is a lovely chap) with new half soles:

After:

I do miss the old square-ish ends. Should probably have asked Roger to use the same shape.

Time to attempt the salvage of the uppers.
