Don't buy a table lamp unless you absolutely have to, they generally suck.

That's not bad, but I have plenty of desk lamps, and the whole point of a table lamp is to create diffused, even light that looks half-natural. It's for a north-facing room. Fitted lights are out of the question. I'm open to other suggestions, but table lamps made sense to me. I need some portability, so floor lamps are less of an option.
