A question of trust

Hi,

I wanted to ask you would trust another fellow member to carry an item for you internationally?

This is based on:

1: another member agreeing to carry the item for you
2: Speaking (via phone or emial) to the member beforehand

I am basing this on the theory of purchasing something on ebay for example - which is based on trust to a large extent.

Is this something you would not consider?

No...

I will do it for a very few people from SF...

It is too risky...

Have nothing to do with it, if it is legitimate then use a commercial firm, if not ponder jail.

If they are willing to go through the trouble to get me to carry it through customs, they can just post it.

I would be willing to pick up a product via proxy at a store though, but even then only for someone I have personally interacted with and not just over the web.

Are you scared that this person might disappear with your item? How much is the item worth?

I've met a few people on here that I trust. I think one has to go with their instincts.

Its a matter of trust in all respects.
Whether you trust him or not and vice versa and whether you think the other guy will stiff you or not.

I did it twice.

Once, I collected goods for this merchant because I was at this convention and he was not.
I volunteered for it and he didnt pay me. He agreed because it would cost him a sum to ship it.
He already paid for it and if I stiff him, he would be in trouble but he trusted me.

Of course, carrying it with me can be quite hefty and bulky especially since I was travelling. It could be drugs or some other contraband but it turned out not to be.

He gave me some discount on some goods I bought from him but not much and really not worth my while if this was a commercial transaction. Its more like doing a merchant a favour. I made an overseas phone call to ensure things are alright but I didnt charge him for it.

The other time wasn't so good. It was an event I attended and I bought some goods for this reseller to sell. I wasnt so close to him and it was a commercial transaction. It was not even a proxy buy. I paid for the stuff.

After I bought the stuff, he didnt pay me much more than what I paid for and sold them at a higher markup. Its my fault for not agreeing on terms with him but I didnt make a loss. I should have told him to buzz off and sold the goods myself but at that time, internet was still in its infancy.
