As I've told John I'm toying with the idea of doing a separate thing on said topic for my own amusement (which could probably be used for 'Walk Proud' as well?). I'll keep in touch...

I'd that pic scanned from a 'Skinzine' and sent it to Paul as I thought it was very rare, so now we know where it came from...nice one Bunty!

But then things started to get very individual around 72.. a free for all, so to speak , Satin Jackets, Flares Afghan Coats, fcuking awful, Then in 74 we went smart again. I remember all the cloths i wore as a skinhead but after that its a bit of a blur... dating everything ?? it was so fast...

Never been able to take 'youth subcultures' seriously as a 'lifestyle' for adults. In fact it's just another hobby slightly outside of the ordinary, nothing more. Whilst being interested in the style myself it was used as a passing fashion (just like many other mod related ones) by the originals...

I don't know of anyone who ever called himself/herself a 'suedehead' at the time. That was never a defined 'look' but a transition from skinhead look to something else more arty/hippy/individualist. It happened while people were growing their hair out and gradually getting a different wardrobe...

But even so that passage is so good it had the hairs on the back of my neck standing up! I think that whole thing about just how immaculate skins could be was what drove me. It was so well executed in some cases it was a thing of real beauty. Of course we're talking a poetic licence of sorts...

When Robert Elms mentions his Brothers mates calling around his house, he just about describes every bit of skinhead clothing in a sentence, which is fair enough. For some reason a lot of people do not like Robert Elms, but one thing for sure he is Working class, originally out of the slums of...

Some people do the thinking, others just recognise the appeal which doesn't mean the one is more important than the other. The fact that we're still discussing a certain 'look' after all those years surely means something pretty substantial though?

I am convinced we were aware of the historical perspective. We wanted to feel that we were embracing tradition – We did visit very traditional mens shops and spent more than we could afford on our clothes. It was an aspirational look. The fact that a company was old and established had a great...

In '65, Mod was big business and so went underground again ? (I think that's what is being hinted at.) The idea behind the early mods was about style rather than fashion I think, hence I've always preferred the term Stylist really. I'd say it was about taking and influence and updating it ever...

Just found this: London Born by Sidney Day. On pp. 66 -67, Day speaks about teenage fashions in the pre-WWII years. He states “If you was in full fashion the bottom of yer trousers was twenty-four inches circumference and you wore winkle picker shoes [And] We always had a white shirt with a...

So interesting, Thanks Alex for sharing. This is a great read,The Victorian Underworld, by Kellow Chesney, First published 1970. Thank you also, Roy. I knew of the Gangs of Manchester book but had never bothered to order and read it. Think I'll just order the one you mention, too, for my...

Not sure if this is of interest (and 'The Firm' may be aware anyway) but I'll post it because of an original mentioning the London bovver boys of the 1890's in some interview; as in his grandparents telling him skinheads were nothing new, even back then. I couldn't find anything on the net...

Most of the Original Skinhead clothes are classics, Brogues, Harringtons, BD shirts, Crombies, these clothes have been around long before Skinheads, I have always said on other sites the influence Ivy League Style had on Skinhead clothing. Most of my clothes are Ivy league and have been for...

In hindsight, there was a look (of ‘what became skinhead’) that has gone through various connotations from the mid 60’s to ’69 (and way beyond in many areas). Whilst for much of that, it didn’t have an overall defining name, did it need one? Good post. Definitions pretty much destroy anything...
