Is suede really better for rain? Really??

Common wisdom is that suede fares badly in rain. I’ve read a number of articles in knowledgeable places like Permanent Style that argue that in fact the opposite is true: suede survives a downpour better than calf.

I live in a very wet climate in Ireland, where some years it rains throughout the summer. So I have an interest in owning rain-friendly shoes. But I just have a hard time accepting that such deeply ingrained wisdom could be so entirely wrong.

Can anyone reassure me that it really is just a myth that suede doesn’t like getting wet? I feel like a kid struggling with the truth about Santa Claus (which is that he exists, of course).

If Simon Compton is so sure suede stands up to the rain why did he make his suede bomber jacket reversible specifically so it can be turned inside-out in the rain?
