What Movies Are You Watching Lately

Couple of silly movies this weekend:

"She's Funny That Way" last night. One of Peter Bogdanovich's last films as a director. Producers include Wes Anderson and Noah Baumbach.

All star cast including Owen Wilson, Imogen Poots, Jennifer Aniston, Will Forte, etc, etc, too many to mention, some in small, clever cameos. Just goofy romp. Woody Allen rip-off in many aspects, but well done in that regard.

Lay the Favorite. Gambling goof starring Rebecca Hall (speaking of Woody) and Bruce Willis and Catherine Zeta-Jones. Others. Rebecca looks great. Bruce looks younger and still has his faculties--this is pre-geezer teaser BS.

Neither of these are great, but both are fun escapes.

Unfortunately, watched them both on FreeVee, which now has more ads than the old late-night movies on broadcast TV. This will not stand.

Tried to watch the first Dune again and fell asleep in like 10 min.

I didn't think part one was that great, and this was less so. As spectacular as some of the visuals are, there's a certain coldness here and an incapacity to make the story and characters engaging - maybe because it's trying to include some of the book's deeper themes, which is commendable, but sadly makes for an uneven viewing experience (Lynch's film skirted some of these and worked better as a narrative, IMO). But then I didn't love the book either so take this with a grain of spice.

Couple of movies I watched this week:

Zone of Interest - beautifully shot with some amazing scenes that remind me of Kalus Theweleit's wonderful book on the psychology of the freikorps, but I have to agree with Pual Schrader when he says that much of the movie relies on a kind of "transcendental" style parlor trick that repeats the same beat over and over again. Great, but not as mind shattering as I've seen in portrayed.


Mikey and Nicky - Some of my favorite acting ever. A gangster flick with barely any gang that's better off for it. The relationship that Cassavetes and Falk seem to build on the fly isn't super detailed but it implies so much more than most other actors could dream of doing. Wonderful movie.

Zone of Interest was fantastic. It made me think about thr opening scene in Son of Saul and him having his head down while cleaning the carnage.

I saw this last friday. I was entertained and the visuals were excellent. However, it was, as usual, 20 minutes or so too long and quite a bit of the story wound up a bit ordinary by the end.

Pleasant find tonight on Amazon Prime. Astronauts crash land on Mars and must survive until a rescue team gets them (2+ years later). I was hoping for some scares (there are none) but it can get quite tense.
