I'd love some tailor feedback on this shirt and what alterations would make it a better fit. To me, it seems roomy in the mid-back but I'm not sure what can be done besides darts. Also, I'm wondering if the upper back looks clean below the back of the collar or if future shirts could benefit from some tweaks in that area. Thank you! It already looks pretty good in my eyes and would keep it as is. If you like it more fitted in the back, the more usual and easier tweak would be sewing darts.

I spent some ££'s getting this altered.

One the jacket is a bit small.
Two the jacket feels very tight under the arm holes.
Three the tailor has apparently let out the jacket, but it now looks pretty bad across the back.
The arms look too tight at the top.

Shall I just scrap this. Or can it be saved.

If it can be saved, I'd really appreciate what guidance I can give to the tailor, as they might need it! Thank you.
Any thoughts on this, greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I am not a tailor, but I do not think you can save this. Probably too tight to start with. My experience in such cases is that any alteration will throw off the balance of the whole thing.

This is a 3.5” lapel - should I adjust to a 2.9” given the proportions?

Would have only let out the top of the side body.
this makes the armhole wider And would give you the room where you need it. If that wasn’t enough, you want a different maker/cut or different size.
don't judge a jacket with your arms fully extended to the front. That’s an exaggerated position.

Got this old Boss silk and linen suit I'd like to get altered a bit, wonder what you all suggest I should be asking for from the tailor. I know the sleeves need to be shorter, trousers up half an inch. It's the jacket I'm less sure about. If I have the waist/back taken in, will that help with the material across the top of the back? Shoulders are at my natural shoulder, so I'm guessing it should be doable
Any advice/suggestions appreciated

So I finally took this suit to BB today for alterations and the tailor and manager insisted that the jacket was way too long and I needed a 38S instead or a 38R, any thoughts? I assumed jacket length was mostly preference and it just needed to cover your butt. And I can’t help but believe that shorter jackets are the trend now

This is the suit unaltered. I still got the alterations done

Jacket looks overall too big throughout the body.
usually there is 1” difference between a regular and a short. Did you try on a 38S? How much did they suggest to shorten the jacket? You could pin up the hem and see what you think before deciding.

I did get the waist taken in about an inch and a half I believe, along with the sleeve being hemmed and pants with cuffs.

This suit has been sitting in my closet for a few years so they don’t make it anymore.

I don’t think they shorten jackets at the store, but do you think it would be worth the cost? It’s only an 1818 suit, not a GF. It’s cost me like $300 on sale

How important is the suit in your wardrobe?

decide after pinning or maybe using scotch tape to turn up the hem and decide how much shorter to make it and if you think it improves the look. If you pin it shorter, stand as far back from a mirror as possible and view the jacket from different angles.
Find out the cost and make a decision.
Trouser looks too long. Is that something else you would change?

It’s just for the office. Im starting a new position as a paralegal manager so im just fine tuning my wardrobe and switching my style up a tad.

Keep in mind this is the suit completely unaltered, so the waist will be taken in and the pants and sleeves will be hemmed. I just don’t want it it to look off. I pick the suits up this Thursday so I’m hoping it will look fine when all the work is done.

My family is from Venezuela, though we now live in the United States. My grandfather passed away several years ago, but we still have many of his clothes, including an incredible suit made to order for him at an Italian tailor in Caracas (the country's capital city), Carlone. It was made in 1995 per the tag. See the attached photos, as you can see it is a wonderful medium-dark blue with very fine stripes in alternating colors of blue, teal, and red. I am lucky because this is just one of three suits that are family heirlooms from the old country; from my other grandfather I have a tux that fits me perfectly, and then there's an extremely traditional tailcoat that is a little too small, both made to order from another Italo-Venezuelan tailoring house, Savino.

My grandfather was a very large man, over 6' tall and at least 200 pounds if not more; this suit is something like a U.S. 46-48; there are no size tags on the jacket. Obviously this cannot be tailored to fit me, I am a size 40, 5'10", about 170 lbs, very average build, although interestingly the sleeves are the right length. But it is of immense sentimental value: I am named after this grandfather and the suit was made/delivered to him just a few weeks before I was born, a thousand miles away, in the United States. My question to the forum: Is it possible to recycle this incredible fabric, by cutting it from the lining, and have a tailor make a new suit with my measurements from it? Would it be as expensive as purchasing a new suit? And any recommendations on tailors who could do so in the NYC area, New Haven CT, or Boston area?

Reposted from other threads to here on the advice of others.
